Don't get me wrong - I've always voted for Democrats (except once, in a local race for Sheriff). It's just that my status has always been an Independent. I've never been a joiner, but I changed my voting status today, and I'm proud to say I'm a member of the Democratic party.
The Republican party is the party of Trump and cruelty and hate, and I'll vote for any Democrat over a Republican.

(12,148 posts)Welcome. I always vote Democratic but in Texas along with a lot of states one can no register as a member of a party. It gets noted which primary we vote in, so there is that.

(12,618 posts)Same thing happened to me. Many years ago, I was an independent who pretty much always voted Dem with a few regrettable forays into the Green Party. This board helped me see the error of my ways, and I've been a registered Democrat for more than 13 years now.

(5,928 posts)I thought I was to the left of the Democratic party. But I like the big tent and pulling together for our nation's success especially now with the Trump threat.

(32,333 posts)After 36 years as a registered "independent" I joined the Democratic Party in 2008 because I wanted to voted for Hillary in the PA Democratic Primary. It looked like she wouldn't make it to the general election, but I wanted to give her my vote when it mattered. I have no regrets joining the Democrats because like you, I had been voting blue in every election anyway. But I was tired of being left out of the primary voting and it seemed like a good thing to do to help Hillary.
Now I know I'll never, ever vote for a Republican candidate - ever. I hope the GOP goes down the tubes for good.
Thanks for sharing your story teach1st!

(37,428 posts)...but for a couple of decades the GOP has been evil enough that I've not dared vote for anyone but a Democrat, and that's how I've been registering.
I can't imagine the Democrat so terrible that I would consider voting Republican. Dems offer, if not always the greatest possible platform, the only realistic possibility for the progressive change we desperately need.
