General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI'm new here, but if I were to recommend who to read on DU
to my twitter followers, it would be
Effie Black, BumRushDaShow, SollyMack, LonePirate, Squinch, dalton99, Mr.Scorpio, Pearliepoo, heartstrings, and peggiesue.
Good stuff, all of the time.
I'm sure I'm missing other wonderful posters, it's just the above have stood out to me.

(1,028 posts)No offense, but what usually catches your attention are very disturbing headlines.
GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)You have been here 2 months yet you not only are fimiliar with a DU members posting history you then cast aspersions against that member who has been here for 6 years? Your post reads like a post of someone who has way more than 2 months experience on DU.
Just sayin.
left-of-center2012
(34,195 posts)I found his comment offensive.
GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)For all I know you and I have gone toe to toe on issues and may seldom agree.
I found the comments uncalled for.
And still amazed that a 2 month member claims to know your posting history. But I have noticed a whole lot of new members pick up the DU lingo, rules and members profiles like the have been here for years
NY_20th
(1,028 posts)I was warned that it was cliquey, but holy shit, I never expected this.
GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)I have no knowledge of the poster that you responded to. For all I know they and I do not agree on a thing. I do not follow nor really pay attention to individual posters. I can guarantee you we are not members of a clique. Hell, I have been here less than 3 years.
I just thought your post was unnecessarily abrasive since they answered your question in a straight up, respectful manner.
Your time here has nothing to do with it. If I see a 15 year member doing something I find offensive I will say something. If you disagree, oh well.
Next time we interact we may be arguing the same side of an issue. Which is why I like this place.

(1,028 posts)While in the General Discussion forum, search under author name.
"Mom accused of letting men rape her two year old daughter"
and
"Dad arrested for shoving baby wipe down infant's throat".
are pretty creepy, and not necessarily general political discussion.
GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)2 months in and you are the arbitrator on what belongs in General Discussion? And not as you say General Political discussion. The rules of GD are posted at the head of the forum.
And do what most of us do...pick subjects that interest you and ignore those that do not. There are plenty of OPs I find silly, insulting and otherwise crazy. I do not feel the need to call out those with interest different than mine.
Enjoy you time here.

(8,311 posts)About to make a post about how the DNA Doe Project is extracting DNA from the nearly 30-year-old remains of a transgender woman found in Florida in 1988 -- they thought she was cis, delaying the investigation until DNA profiling was started on every Florida unidentified decedent case.
It's okay, my friends thought my advocacy was weird, too, until a mutual friend went missing under very suspicious circumstances and police did nothing.

I wish we had a normal person to contend with. Beyond belief.
NY_20th
(1,028 posts)You are also one of my favorite contributors, but to deduce my reaction to some stories that are not even political affiliated is beyond belief to you? Really?
moriah
(8,311 posts)GD is about stories that may be of general interest, political or not.
I kinda wish we had GD : P back because of the current arguments about primary contenders. To be honest, I'd rather see a thread about a horrific crime or a stupid person calling 911 for a non-crime than more divisive threads about our current Democratic candidates and who's endorsing who and why they're bad because of it.
But I have already declared myself weird and don't mind the labeling.
and you're not weird. I've enjoyed your posts here and you are also among my favorite reads.
Different strokes for different folks.
Pedophilia stories gross me the hell out though.
moriah
(8,311 posts)... when reading about some of the cases out there. But perhaps too much exposure toughened me to be able to read the worst cases and just feel enormous pity vs sick or afraid....
I won a sort of "prove your mettle" contest as as the only woman working nights on a technical support desk because of my "odd" hobby -- one guy showed me a pic from Hurricane Katrina, from one of those gore sites. He thought he could gross me out by a picture of a dead body. I showed him the postmortem from Doe Network's 362UFNV. It wasn't particularly graphic, but the angle of her neck in the post-mortem combined with the use of cardboard to try to photograph only the parts of her mummified face that hadn't decomposed... it did make one a bit sick to view.
He never griefed me again.

(7,627 posts)What about clicking latest threads and reading up on what people are discussing ? If it's not interesting, you move on to another post. Or of course, you could just read posts from a few people and sample a very small cross section of DU.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)That is a natural and understandable reaction. But I agree with you, if an OP header does not interest me, I don't click on, if I read a post that I sharply disagree with, I either respond with a post or close the OP without a response. If I find the OP interesting, I may post several posts in it.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)They will find their favorites. I tend to just read OPs and posts. I clearly agree with some posters more than others, but I don't have favorites and I don't have anyone on ignore.

(31,261 posts)We have enough problems getting people that agree on 80-100% of policy issues to get along. Why have people come in that have no intention but throwing a turd into the punchbowl?
Sometimes, even with solid democrats, I feel that a person can ask them how they want their toast browned and will get 99 different answers back, when the toaster can only do 4-5 toast levels max. Sometimes I think that we shoot ourselves in the foot, I wish we would stop that so that we can end the terror that the deplorable right has brought on the country.
