(20,591 posts)My grandfather made out like a bandit on the soil bank program. He got paid very well for not doing anything. Then he had Federal conservation programs dig four, seven acre ponds on his property FOR FREE, mind you, then the same conservation program stocked those ponds with Black Bass and Bluegills (a type of sunfish) FOR FREE, mind you, and then, being a staunch Republican (everyone was in our little town of 1,700 people) complained like hell when Blacks wanted equal rights. And those damned Hippies? (of which I was one) well, they really frosted the old boy's flakes, protesting against the Vietnam War IN THE GREATEST COUNTRY ON THE PLANET!!!! (well, it was great for him! )
Yeah, Soil Bank. A flood of forgotten memories just came rushing back to my mind, and I completely saw the injustice of that government program writ large, right in my own family.
My grandfather was a Welfare Queen.
He didn't want anyone else to get a hand up though. That wouldn't have been fair.

(5,961 posts)FWIW, the Republican farm state Senators I heard today a) do see it as a handout and b) would rather see the trade issues settled.
Alternative thought: instead of drug testing them, let them legally plant and sell marijuana.

(4,197 posts)Drug testing defense contractors. I would include their lobbyists in that effort.
Also, "let them legally plant and sell marijuana" works for me. Of course, I live in Colorado.

(6,122 posts)And you could kill two-three-four birds with one stone. Growing marijuana puts the farmers back to work. The state gets to tax it and make a bundle. The people who want it for medical purposes have a legit/safe way to get it. The recreational users have a legal outlet that cuts out the hassle of getting charged with possession. As the French say, voila!

(5,123 posts)While we're at it, how about another amendment for the CEO's of corporations who receive all those republicon tax breaks? That's welfare too, corporate welfare!! Let's drug test 'em all!! I'd put money on it that about 90% would fail.
