Oh, sure, it would be a farce and Trump would most likely incriminate himself 5 times a minute, but I don't think they need to interview Trump.

Keep in mind, the target of the investigation is the last person they interview, if at all. The trick is to go into that interview with all the evidence already in hand.

that Mueller would actually want to interview djt would be if he and his staff have an office pool going on how many lies Trump can make up in two hours.

If he uses a subpoena to get him in front of a grand jury, Trump would probably challenge it all the way to supreme court, which would take up a lot of time in an investigation that involves national security.

donnie obviously gets nothing out of it. he might incriminate himself, and surely he would commit perjury. at best he would somehow be disciplined and invoke the fifth on every question. at a minimum, it's a political loss and likely a legal loss as well.

mueller would likely be wasting his time, so he wins by being able to spend his time more constructively. in all likelihood, by this point, donnie is probably a target of the investigation, and targets are normally not interviewed.

a grand jury decides if there is enough evidence to justify bringing charges. it's meant to be looking only at the prosecutor's side, not the defendant's (that's what a trial is for). as such, prospective defendants aren't normally interviewed. you can't make them incriminate themselves, and you can't subpoena them solely in the hopes of getting them to commit perjury (that's what a perjury trap is).

so you normally only interview witnesses, for the purpose of possibly bringing charges against *other* people. when mueller first asked for an interview, donnie wasn't a target, he was just a subject, meaning that he likely was a witness to crimes of other people. which is damning in and of itself, but that's another story.

the fact that mueller has apparently dropped the matter rather suggests that donnie is now a target, no longer a mere subject.

about the possibility of his being interviewed, and in the process pile up more evidence of Trump's desperate attempts to undermine the investigation. Trump's dodging behavior also might be causing a few swing voters to recognize how shady he is and how likely his guilt is.
