I want to hear the answer too. I briefly maintained residence in Amherst between 2004 and 2007, and I'd like to hear an answer.

of MA would have been talking about it. Also talking about how Mittens doesn't brag about being governor of that state. I mean what the hell is wrong with MA. They are very nice people and pretty smart. Come people of MA it's time you stick up for your state instead of letting us outsiders do it for you. I wouldn't let these damn republican rednecks talk bad about my state.

and I have insurance through my employer now. My co-pays steadily have gone up, and my monthly contribution has gone up, but I still have insurance.

Besides the huge cost increases from the insurance companies, and the outlay from the state for people who can't afford insurance (more than projected by the way, since costs went up) the only real difference to me, is that I have to file proof of insurance with my tax state returns. That said, there is an effort underway to reign in insurance company rate increases.

The system is far from perfect but I do believe that is was a positive step. I do NOT like the mandate that you have to file proof of insurance with your tax returns or you get hit with a tax.

The other thing that rubs me the wrong way is that the insurance companies get a huge payday out of it. But I am glad for the health insurance. I do not know how people who simply cannot afford insurance and whose employers do not offer insurance get health care though. I know there are state funded subsidies but I don't know the details of getting coverage and what is available - sorry. Perhaps someone who does know will chime in.

7. I was laid off some 5 years ago and went thru a transition of insurance programs.

First I was offered COBRA and the cost was outrageous so I declined it. I was excused from paying penalties of not having insurance on being determined that I could not afford insurance. Then I applied for SSDI and got it in very short time. Now that I had SSDI I had to buy Mass insurance. I tried to get Mass Health as I could not have Medicare. There was a 2 year wait before you could have Medicare upon starting SSDI. I was determined to have too much income from SSDI (2100 monthly) to qualify for cheap or free Mass Health. I had to apply for outside insurance set up by Mass. I got Commonwealth insurance. It covered everything except drugs. I was lucky as at that time I was taking a few drugs and Walmart had just started offering generic meds for like 10 bucks each for each 3 month supply, I was able to get all on a generic basis. The Commonwealth insurance cost me like 125 a month IIRC. 2 years later I got Medicare along with drug benefits. Cost was a bit more. 130 plus 37 bucks for drugs. So yea I guess Mass insurance worked out well for me in transition to Medicare.
