Ohio state Senator Troy Balderson is running as the Republican in Ohios 12th Congressional District special election today. At most points over the past hundred years, this would mean that he was virtually entitled to the seat. But its hard to be the Republican candidate in special elections these daysBalderson is locked in a virtual tie with his Democratic opponent, Danny OConnor, and he didnt help himself by stepping in a big old pile of shit the day before the election.
The bad moment came when Balderson told a crowd at a rally in Zanesville, OH, that We dont want someone from Franklin County representing us.
Franklin County, apart from being where OConnor is from, is home to Columbus and is the most heavily-populated county in Ohio. As New York magazine notes, its also home to roughly a third of the districts voters. Oops.

(6,691 posts)I have a good feeling about O'Connor, but don't know if this gaffe will make an impact. It happened late evening. There were probably a lot of nonvoters who went to bed, got up in the morning, got ready and went to work without ever checking the news at any point, and therefore never saw this.

(6,831 posts)That is NOT the most populated county in Ohio.
That honor goes to Cuyahoga County with almost 1.3 million people, home to Cleveland.

(12,443 posts)I read that comment but it didn't make an impression because I'm not familiar with the region.
But yeah, that was a gaffe you do not want to make on the eve of a tighter than tight election. Here's hoping a lot of people in the district heard or read about this. The more the merrier! For Dems, that is

(8,345 posts)I came up in Texas and if someone says 'politician from Harris County or Travis County' they specifically mean minorities and liberals. A pretty clear call to his base that in my view would probably not alienate many who haven't already bailed on the GOP, but that's just my opinion. It could well engergize Dems, though...

(12,443 posts)MSNBC reporter on the ground: Republicans are already making excuses, talking about what a lousy campaign Balderson ran.
That doesn't sound too confident to my ears. Wonder if those exit polls are screaming that their boy is losing??? Or if the early voting tipped heavily to Dems?
Something must have them rattled.
