I have the windows closed and the A/C running. I ordered an air purifier that handles smoke and that should arrive tomorrow. If that's not enough I may take a vacation somewhere upwind of California till it's "over".

14. One day last week a friend called me and said,

look out your window, its YELLOW outside. Sure enough, the low clouds from fog were mixing with particles and smoke from the fires up north. It drifted southward towards the city and with the low fog clouds turned everything into a hue of yellow. I wish i had a camera , I would have taken photos!!

26. We had that same yellow sky from fire smoke in Seattle last summer. Eerie, isn't it?

Last year, we had the hot east wind blowing that smoke into Seattle. That east wind is usually what drives up our temperatures here.

This year, we haven’t had the strong east wind or as much smoke. But we have still had heat wave followed by a couple days of near-normal temps, then another week long heat wave. Record temps followed by record temps, again and again each summer for the last five or so years. And this year is setting records again, even WITHOUT the normal high temperature drivers.

In Europe, they have noted that their sustained heat and dryness is also happening during what should be a cooler phase of weather. At least there, they report on the clear connection to global warming.

is that I don't have to shovel snow, but I have done that in Salt Lake City, and it wasn't that much fun. Snow is fine for skiing, bobsledding and all but when its packed in around your house and you are trapped inside, you best have some heat on...other wise you could freeze to death!

15. We haven't seen blue skies in Sacramento for over a week now.

The sun rises an angry red, and sets just as angry. The skies are overcast in a dull grayish yellow tone. The haze is visible at ground level like fog. I wake up in the morning with my eyes glued shut, and the scent of smoke in my nostrils. It has been making us feel sick at times, too.

I wonder how many of these fires are naturally occurring and how many are arson.

20. Mount Shasta, CA - an hour north of the Carr fire.

I'm an hour south of the Oregon border, and an hour north of the Carr fire. We are suffering, seriously, from all of the smoke from that nightmare.

But with regard to the OP, here is the reality. I moved here in 2005. In the first (at least) 5-6 years (perhaps more) the Summer temperatures were pretty moderate. Down the hill is Redding, where that Carr fire is playing out. We refer to Redding as "the oven".

And while I realize I'm being redundant, the smoke and air quality here is horrid, but interestingly, that smoke is blocking the sun and our daily temps are a bit better at the moment.

Redding is at 344' elevation at the very north end of the central valley. Their Summer temps are very frequently in the high-90's to mid-100's. It totally sucks down there and I rarely go shopping there as a result. Prefer to go North to Ashland/Medford.

Mount Shasta (3500' elevation) used to be pretty comfortable in the Summer, especially relative to Redding. But in recent years, we have noticed a tangible increase in daily temps, getting to the point that we may not want to live here any longer. Add to that the annual fire season, and the appeal for this mountain-top community is quickly declining.

Look at the temps below, and note how the averages are climbing.
