Could it be that maybe Trump is calling for an end to the investigation - yet he really wants it to drag on? What would be the reason?

Maybe - because in the meantime - he can do all sorts of destructive things to this country; regulations; judge appointments; tax breaks; corporate giveaways; etc.

Once this investigation comes to a head - it might spell an end to his presidency and that is something that both he and the Repugs don't want to happen until they can do more damage to our democracy.

Best - Investigation ends with no findings, which Trump hopes will happen somehow. But the second best outcome is that the investigation takes forever, delaying the outcome, perhaps until you die or win the propaganda war.
