the 8 hour work day

Just learned from my SIL, who travels to different countries for work, that many countries have restrictions on working overtime. For example, in Germany, overtime work must be preapproved by a council. The thinking is that the company should hire more workers if there is a need for overtime.
Imagine that - reduce unemployment!

My SIL works for a US company that was purchased by a holding company. Their work philosophy is to push workers as hard as they can, reclassify workers so their OT is comp time, which few have the time to take. In effect the corporate structure assures that people work for free.
Her eyes have been opened.

about Norway is that CEO's there do not make huge salaries - it would be considered in poor taste - no law necessary.
On the other hand, the CEO of my SIL's company made $45 million one year.
