Carl Paladino, a Buffalo real estate developer and big Donald Trump supporter, announced Saturday that he intends to run for Congress in New Yorks 27th district. The seat is being vacated by Rep. Chris Collins (R-N.Y.), who was arrested on charges of insider trading last week.
Paladino is basically Buffalos version of Trump ― loud, into real estate, conservative and known for offending people.
Paladino was co-chair of Trumps presidential campaign in New York. He most recently served on the Buffalo school board until the state education commissioner kicked him off in August 2017 for revealing confidential information about negotiations with the citys teachers union.
But members of the school board had previously voted for him to leave after he made racist comments in response to a local newspapers questionnaire about what he would like to see happen in 2017. Paladino said hed like President Barack Obama to die from mad cow disease and called first lady Michelle Obama a man who should go live with gorillas.

The MAGAheads love this guy. Not sure how he gets around the residency requirements, though. Buffalo isn't in NY-27

(5,746 posts)We need to stop rooting for the opponent who is "so terrible he's an automatic loser."
In my lifetime, California has elected Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Arizona has elected Ev Meacham and Jan Miller, and the US has elected Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump.
The days of "principled Republicans" who would vote based on character rather than gang loyalty are gone.

Collins would still be on the ballot on a third party nomination.

(53,061 posts)1) He suspended his campaign, which is not the same as resigning his office and officially resigning as a candidate. If he resigns he will face restriction on how he can use his campaign funds. If he suspends it he possibly can use those funds for attorney fees.
2) Even if he resigns, that doesn't get him off the ballot because he already won the primary. The Republicans can only replace him if they get him "disqualified". They can do that by getting him another position on another ballot which would disqualify him for this position, or by not being a resident.
Under New York state election law, Collins name could be taken off the ballot under certain narrowly defined circumstances that include death, disqualification or being nominated for a different office such as a county clerkship.
You cannot 'resign' yourself of the ballot after you have been elected in the primary.

About a dozen Republicans are being considered to replace the Republican lawmaker on the ballot in the 27th District after he announced over the weekend that he would drop his bid for re-election. But first the county party chairs of eight counties have to figure out how to take Collins off the ballot after he announced over the weekend that he would not seek re-election following his indictment and arrest for alleged insider trading.
Only after they have gotten Collin off the ballot, can party leaders decide on the dozen or so potential replacements to face off against Democrat Nate McMurray in the November election.
GOP county leaders are considering two options for removing Collins from the ballot, according to media reports. One option is to nominate him for a county clerkship somewhere else in the state in order to disqualify him from the ballot and allow another candidate to take his place in the 27th Congressional District, The New York Times reports. There is also the possibility of establishing that the three-term congressman is an out-of-state resident because of his houses in Washington, D.C. and Florida, according to Politico.

(11,416 posts)at least in the areas nearest to Buffalo: Paladino carried Erie and Niagara counties (parts of which are in NY-27). He may have been a racist idiot, but he was their racist idiot.
I know enough about NYS politics to know it's hard to get someone off a ballot, but I don't know what the mechanics of replacing someone who resigned a seat are. Or someone who is in jail. And for that matter, did Collins actually resign? Or did he just decide not to actively campaign for a bit?

(82,849 posts)Too bad Collins' name will remain on the ballot. I don't think Paladino's supporters are likely to remember how to spell his name for a write-in campaign.
