When I was a kid everyone had finished dinner and gone into the living room to talk.

I heard an odd noise in the kitchen/dining room and quietly walked in, where our dog was standing full on the table licking the plates.

She was one of those sensitive dogs who NEVER did anything wrong if she could help it and she looked at me as embarrassed as I've ever seen a dog. She daintily got off the table and went to her usual corner looking so sad, begging forgiveness. I didn't say a thing, I was trying not to laugh.

Any of our cats would have looked at me like "What's your problem THIS time, human?"

If you come in and find your dog eating your dinner, he will look totally embarrassed and beg forgiveness. A cat would grab one more bite as he leaped off the table.
