Women accused of killing Kim Jong Nam could be freed

Two women accused of murdering the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un could walk free Thursday, if a judge decides there's not enough evidence to proceed with their trial.

Kim Jong Nam died in February last year after Siti Aisyah of Indonesia and Doan Thi Huong of Vietnam allegedly wiped his face with VX nerve agent in Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur airport.

The two women have been described by friends and family as simple, well-meaning women who had expressed interest in acting jobs. Aisyah's father claimed his daughter was used and "never would have done such a thing" in an interview with CNN in October.

According to authorities in Malaysia, the supposed TV producers were North Korean agents, four of whom have been charged in relation to Kim's murder but have since left the country.

From the beginning these women have claimed to have been duped into participating in what they believed was a reality show prank... The factual basis of that claim needs to be established in the appropriate law enforcement/judicial context of course, but... Is it more important to you that SOMEONE be punished than these particular women be treated justly?

As noted above, North Korean/DPRK agents -- four of them -- have been charged with their role in this matter but are not in custody. Shall these women be sacrificed in their stead? What is it you mean by asking about this crime being "unpunished"?

The women lacked intent. In our law the women might or might not be tried for negligent manslaughter because they may not have known anything about the murder plot. But their acts were also not entirely accidental. It's a tough one. But if seated on a jury, I probably would not convict the women unless new facts emerged at trial.
