When I was a kid in the late 50's and early 60's, news shows like

Huntley and Brinkley on NBC used to run pieces on incidents which would happen in and around the then-Soviet Union which were quite denigrating to the country: such as floods and their inability to cope with them, or grain shortages and their inability to cope with them, or even deaths of significant governmental figures and their inability to cope with them. Generally an in-depth report would be followed by what the Soviet News Agency Tass or Pravda would have reported on the incident which was either a complete denial of its existence, or a trumped-up lie (pardon the pun).

And the American newscasters would smile, laugh or in the case of Brinkley, raise that left eyebrow sardonically.

But now, we have the Trump Administration and SHS reporting exactly in the same manner as Tass or Pravda did: lying through the teeth. Somehow, for a fair percentage of the American population, this is now all right with them.

How far we've come in so few years....

so it is harder to control the narrative. During the Cold War there was no Breitbart, etc. or social media with their biased reporting.

After seeing 63,000,000 idiots vote for the Dotard, I have no idea where the hell they get their info as an informed electorate - 'Apprentice' reruns?

Same owners, same manipulating the messages.

And sadly, there is a segment of the US population that gets its entertainews from Fux.

have all done an excellent job of getting out the hate on women and Blacks the last couple of decades, and what we are witnessing now is their success in dividing the country.

I read somewhere that these hate mongers, Limbaugh, Hannity and Beck all carry handguns due to their paranoia.

UK broadcast media still stuck on old laws... that still work. TV and radio news is regulated to be non partisan, in fact party political advertising on UK screens is non existent.

The news gravitas you seek still exists. It just has a British accent. It's not as flashy and whiz-bang as the US cable news networks (and the robot cameras can sometimes have a mind of their own) but BBC World News channel is worth a watch.

The Russians have finally won the Cold War. Not a bullet fired or a bomb dropped. They have a cooperative puppet installed in the Oval Office, a Complicit Republican Congress and 24/7 chaos and daily diminution of the rule of law and order. Stalin, Khrushchev, Brezhnev and all the others laughing from that great dacha in the sky.

It's not over yet, but, we are surely on the wrong path. Just bc everything FEELS so bad, doesn't mean we have given up the ghost. Remember D-Day. Our times coming. RESIST IT.

Many daily papers also had a "Labor" Section for workers and employees, not just a Business Section like more recently.

People read more then, especially news, IMO. Morning and, or evening newspaper editions were diligently followed in many households on a daily basis, not random.

Broadcast television news with the prominent journalist anchors you mention was serious news then-- no "infotainment' mixed in at all. That era was prior to revoking the Fairness Doctrine of 1949 by Reagan in the 1980s which opened the door to the explosion of RW radio. Then in 1996, the Telecomm Act removed ownership limits, regulationds off media companies enabling mass conglomeration of media into the 4-5 giants that that we have today.

Funny how when the gop wants to destroy the PBS channel or whatever though, they refer to the Fairness Doctrine they destroyed themselves. Effer's.
