While it will never convince the true Trumpons, we should remember that Trump owes...
everything to the press.
New Yorkers remember how he begged and pleaded to get on the Post's Page Six at least once a week. He was reputed to have a phone with over 30 speed dial numbers on it-- all news connections. And he would go down the list daily.
Trump lived and died by the press. He provided them with ready copy on a slow news day, and always had some outrageous act or story. No one will forget how he trumpeted the Central Park ice rink, or demanded the death penalty for the eventually proven innocent Central Park Five.
There were plenty of other RE tycoons in NYC, and some, like Harry Helmsley, got a lot of the same kinds of press. Helmsley, though, never finished high school but got his first job in a real estate office, eventually proving himself to be adept at the business and making partner and then creating one of the larger empires-- without going bankrupt. He was no angel, of course,p but his wife Leona seems to have gotten him into more trouble than he was looking for.
The Lefraks, the Lawrences, and the other NY RE powers never accepted Trump as one of them. Even though he came from money, he was crude, crass, and definitely not invited to the best parties.
So he invited himself to those parties, and made sure there was a press crew around.
And during the campaign, remember how every day there were tons of items about Trump that weren't related to the race? Trump, Trump, Trump... All day long and every day. Where would he be without the constant media attention?
Yes, he has learned very well how to manipulate the press and owes everything to them. Now that they are ganging up on his bullshit, he hates them. The shoe doesn't fit the other foot very well
George Washington was reputed to think about not running for a second term because of all the negative press the Father of our Country was getting-- and that was from people who lived through the war! Every President has complained since, and they have the right to complain, just as the press has the right, obligation even, to piss them off.
