Wow. Al Sharpton can really think on his feet. I was so impressed.

Last edited Sun Aug 19, 2018, 02:55 PM - Edit history (1)

He handed a Republican Sam Nunberg his ass on AM Joy today. Nunberg was trying to monopolize the conversation with his usual BS and Al put him in his place with intelligence and style. I had to laugh. He literally schooled Nunberg. Amazing. I haven't watched Al very much before, but you can believe I will definitely watch him in the future.

I saw the Rev. take Nunberg apart.

I am sad that Nunberg is a member of the bar and evidently passed a bar exam someplace

You need to apologize.

An AA drawl never made anyone sound like a dummy, except maybe to bigots.

He's clearly AA and clearly has a drawl. You may note that in no way did I disparage an "AA drawl" as something bad or offensive. In fact, I wrote quite the opposite. Just like a Southern speech drawl, or a Boston accent are clearly ways that people speak. You're the one, who saw and projected "AA drawl" as something bad. As a matter fact, I wrote many complimentary things about Rev Al. You need to lighten up.

Please be specific.

And claiming that a person's accent makes them sound dumb is not a disparagement and telling someone "You're the one, who saw and projected 'AA drawl' as something bad" is rather bizarre when you claim such a drawl makes someone "sound like a dummy."

is not intelligent. I live in Texas, and I've heard people disparage AA accents more than a few times. So if you read what I actually wrote, I think that I warned those who think that an AA drawl makes someone a dummie is very mistaken, because Rev Al is no one's fool. You really do need to lighten up.

And given the people that Texas has elected to represent them, those folks are right.

You said, “his AA drawl may make him sound like a dummie, but ...” Huge difference.

”She may SEEM stupid because she’s a woman, but” vs. “Some misogynists may think she’s stupid because she’s a woman ...”

“Obama may LOOK like a thug because he’s black, but” vs. “Some racists may think Obama’s a thug because he’s black ...”

If you don’t actually believe that an African-American “drawl” makes someone “sound like a dummy,” perhaps you should just acknowledge that your comment was poorly worded, instead of defensively lashing out at everyone who understandably was offended by it.

And, no, dear - I don’t need to lighten up. You need to make better language choices since people are naturally going to assume you mean what you write.

I wish a lot of others would speak as deliberately as he does. He's easy to follow, unlike a lot of politicians and pundits/surrogates who are trying to blurt their shit out so fast that there's no time to challenge what they say or even get your thoughts around their last sentence before the next one comes out, which is particularly a tactic that Republicans and their surrogates use to spew their garbage talking points. Sharpton wants people to hear what he says and engage him in debate, slowly, so he can control and dismantle their argument effectively so we get the impression he just wiped the floor with them. He's unafraid of being challenged himself. In that sense I think he's a terrific speaker.

I'm hoping that they show clips of this on some of the other news shows. This is important and they often do that - and Rev Al has been a guest on quite a few of the other shows lately.

And welcome to DU! It's great to have you with us! We also have a Video and Multimedia Forum and a lot of videos from the news shows get posted there.

Melber was overly respectful and let Bannon get away with spewing a plethora of significant lies. What a highly successful propaganda opportunity Bannon has been gifted by Melber. I rarely miss Melber's cogent commentary, so this interview was a deep disappointment.

Too many MSNBC hosts get fooled because Nunberg will say a few bad words about tRump or Stone. But if you listen to what he is actually saying, he’s in there bailing water for his RW buddies.

he jumped into the RW fever swamps and mentioned the UraniumOne bullshit in passing. That little aside tells you that Nunberg is busy doing the work of the RW nut jobs, and that any deplorable watching that show would be jumping with joy that he inserted that bit of discredited fiction into the conversation and wasn’t challenged by Al or the other guests.
