BY MICHAEL BURKE - 08/19/18 01:51 PM EDT
Former GOP Senator Rick Santorum said Sunday that special counsel Robert Mueller could avoid comparisons to Sen. Joseph McCarthy by investigating the Justice Department (DOJ) and FBI.
Santorum said on CNNs State of the Union that Mueller should investigate the DOJ and FBI with respect to Hillary Clinton and all these other things.
The former senator was responding to a string of tweets from President Trump early Sunday morning claiming that Mueller makes McCarthy, who searched for communists in the U.S. government in the 1950s, look like a baby.
Its his job to do a thorough investigation, Santorum said of Mueller. Theres certainly no evidence that hes looking into any of this.
Other panelists on State of the Union pushed back against Trumps comparison of McCarthy to Mueller's probe into possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.
Former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm said Mueller is the total hero.

(5,755 posts)The investigation will uncover who did what to who. If Hillary is guilty it will be discovered. If you are so sure you should be thrilled its being investigated.

(1,701 posts)When Democrats lose elections, they disappear from talk shows. But that is not true of Republicans. Santorum and Gingrich are two of the more egregious examples. When was the last time anyone saw Al Gore on one of these programs? Or Secretary Clinton? Yet the Republicans endlessly whine about the so-called liberal media. As Pogo said, Ha, ha. It is to laugh.

(16,254 posts)If Trump hadn't committed so many crimes (for now, I'll say alleged, but we all know how deep into doo-doo he is) and involved so many people, Mueller would have been done with his investigation a long time ago.
They all seem extremely nervous because of Mueller. I doubt they are too thrilled with all the accolades Mueller has gotten from all sides of the government. He hasn't given them anything to glom onto to bring him down. In contrast to the lying Republicans, Mueller stands out like an American eagle...strong, focused and patriotic.
They can only wish to be the same.

(16,423 posts)Mueller's authority is towards investigating whether the russian government influenced the 2016 election and any matter that arises from that.

Nothing in this document says that he has the right to start an investigation against the DOJ, unless he finds evidence that would make the connection in the first place.

(7,538 posts)We should investigate the Department of Justice for it's use of slave labor in Bureau of Prisons and it's lack of oversight over both ICE and Customs and Border Protection abuses. We should investigate the FBI New York office for it's blatant political interference in the 2016 elections.
