General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI've been trying to talk my Republican neighbor into voting for Beto for a year.
My neighbor is nice guy just a dyed in wool Republican from many generations of the same. He doesn't like Trump and chose not to vote in 2016 rather than vote for Trump. I took that as a small victory.
Today I see a Beto for Senate sign in his yard! I called and he's coming over for some BBQ and beer later.
One small victory at time!

(19,564 posts)We had 4X as many people show up as expected at a red, rural town hall recently. It literally was standing room only. Only about 450 people, but this was in deep red podunk. We just need to wake our non voters to make this thing happen, but we seem to be gaining some Republicans, too.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed we get enough extra votes in these areas, but I'm not taking anything for granted. Work, work, work!

Have you looked over in Mistletoe Heights!!! They're breeding over there.
What's the coolest is none of these folks were inclined to put signs in their yards before.

(19,564 posts)I don't mean to get anyone's hopes up, since Cruz is not working this red area, but enthusiasm seems to be down here. Beto is the majority of signs, but that means little since usually most people don't put them out. So, take that with a grain of salt, but still have hope and work!

(38,427 posts)Most of us can take a few lies..once in a while..a few or one...
Politicians ...well more often, but at some point they have to tell the truth..Trump??? Cruz is an arrogant asshole of the number 1 type. (the worst) Trump is a lying arrogant asshole of the 1++ type....(the very worst there is imaginable)
Your neighbor could not take the Cruz or Trump type....He had so much of Trump, 1++ that he couldn't even think of voting for Cruz who is a type.1
Beto seems like an honest young lad, who tells the truth and seems ok..Not arrogant, not mean, not standing above others, trying be honest and a word no one uses these days...kind....
The reason for the change is obvious...Obvious to you, and to me, and to everyone here. I hope it is obvious to the people in Texas..If it is, then Cruz will lose and Beto will win..
THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS GREAT STORY.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! made my day, thank you again...

(19,564 posts)In my opinion, he's what Texas needs to wrest power from the hands of Republicans on a state level. He's the best, and hardest working candidate, we've offered up in a long time here on a state level.
I just hope he can be close and empower down ticket candidates. Hell, I'm beginning to think he might win. Crazy as that sounds.
My neighbor and his wife were extremely positive this afternoon. Politics are a form of religion in rural Texas. It's hard to explain unless you live here.
They both said they're voting for Beto today, but the wife already told me she was probably going to months ago. She's more informed than her husband on several issues. He's the shocker for me today.
They both should be Democrats. They oppose Republicans on immigration, tariffs and even the current tax cuts. It's just they've been brainwashed into believing anyone with a D behind their name was their enemy since before they became adults. We agree on most things in politics, and the things we disagree on are dwindling rapidly. I'm even beginning to sway them on social services, which they used as young adults like so many others here. Baby steps, but they're listening.
My fingers are crossed, but I know Cruz still holds the vast majority of the of rural voters. We just need to siphon off a small percentage of these rural people to win in November.
One bite at a time.
TexasBushwhacker
(20,190 posts)That's not exactly a landslide, and he was running against a relative unknown, Paul Sadler. Beto is running a much better campaign.

(19,564 posts)I agree with you, but damn, I'm doing my best here.
If registered, potential voters count, I'm a boss... but, it's really hard to actually flip a Republican. Don't believe the hype, they're hard eggs to crack! Which is why I'm normally about voter turnout and registration. Which doesn't mean we're not flipping a few who should have already been Democrats. We are, but it's a few.
It takes hard local work to flip Republicans in any state. You have to know deeply, and specifically who and what you're speaking to to get through their armor. Even then it takes time and work if you hope to resonate with them. They're tribal and tend to be pretty crabby. There's so much patience involved it's mind boggling.
Granted, Trump helped break some barriers with his extremism, but that's not going to last. I'm an opportunist and not afraid to exploit this brief window of commonality, but it's a small window. After this I have to prove to them we're still their better choice post Trump. These are people who don't buy into Russian collusion after all. They're not like you and me. They're foreign to our thought processes. This isn't something for the faint of heart to attempt.
Like I always say, it's work, work, and more work.

(19,564 posts)We talked about Trump being bad for the country, a local plant opening up, the worsening air quality in the state and I found out he's not a fan of coal power plants. Which then led us full circle back to trashing Trump.
He says he's giving Beto a try because he seems like a hard worker. I said I hope he gets a chance to see him working as our US Senator.
