Non-white millennials and white people over 65 make up equal fractions of America.
In the 2016 election, 65% of white people and 71% of people over 65 voted.
But less than 60% of people of color and 49% of millennials voted.
So much squandered power.

(58,785 posts)1. I've come to believe people should probably be required to vote,
with exceptions for conscientious objectors. One of our highest principles is representative government, but in anxious times, and now with new means of inimical mass manipulation, zealotry and extremism become movements, distort representation even more than usual, and threaten to bring down our democracy.
Cultural factors and age are both involved here, of course. But speaking more generally, I don't think there will ever be a time when plain old day-to-day security and physical comfort don't encourage a feckless complacency in too many who haven't bothered to realize they can't afford it.
