(1,058 posts)he confessed and led police to where he dumped her body.
If convicted, I hope he gets life w/o parole and rots in prison and then rots in hell.

(29,341 posts)but I hate the implication that it would somehow be better to have your child murdered by some clean, cut all-American boy like Ted Bundy (who was considered a real up and comer in the Washington state Republican party).

(10,602 posts)We must find a way to counter what they will do. This latest incident just sadly adds to their rhetoric. And for some voters it really rings. Willie Horton kinds of ads sadly worked. I remember seeing that ad. The ad was misleading and it was NOT countered.
The other issue is that the GOP does not really want to address illegal immigration. They want to be able to use it like they have race for decades really. Because they will not directly address sanctioning employers for hiring undocumented workers there still is an incentive for people to cross the border. In a way the GOP has actually helped make the problem worse on purpose.
At DOL you could see the consequences of employers hiring undocumented workers from all over the planet. It was not just Hispanics. But they were targeted because of convenience.
Now you say gloom and doom perhaps. The fact that the GOP has been actually rewarded over the years for their mayhem makes it difficult to feel optimistic. The GOP has trashed so much over time, yet they have ended up with total control.
None of these elections should even be close the GOP has done so much damage and hurt so many people directly. I simply cannot understand seeing a report of some voter knowing that the GOP has screwed them directly still showing allegiance.

(31,261 posts)When I went online earlier today and read the headline that the young woman's body had been found, my first thought was that I hope the killer was not a POC, because there will never be an end politically. A White man wiped out his whole family allegedly, but, if we point that out to counter what the GOP will do with the mutdered college woman, then we are being simplistic, they are simply more polished at using ghoulish tragedy to ramp up hate and collect votes than we will ever be, or would ever want to be.

(7,964 posts)Especially on such a day as this. From the recent elections to today's news, let's count the wins the good guys have had in the past year and focus on them for a change.

(101,850 posts)This is a profound tragedy and my thoughts and prayers are with Mollie Tibbetts' family and friends but we already lost those voters who see it as anything more than that.

(14,565 posts)Right wingers desperately claiming it is more important than today's Mueller developments. I saw Rick Santorum attempt the same thing on Anderson Cooper.
They'll probably try to make this a Willie Horton type of thing toward the midterms, especially if more bad news breaks on the legal front.
On edit: I noticed we have two Iowa races on the "most important" House list -- districts 1 and 3. Our candidates will need an effective reaction to this issue

(14,565 posts)Many posts in this thread are in denial toward how significant the Republicans believe this is.
It's hardly going to be the last time we hear of this, and it won't be confined to Iowa elections. That's all I'm saying.

(101,850 posts)If we are pinning our hopes for electoral success on voters who believe your nominal immigrant, illegal or legal, is a murderer, rapist, drug dealer, or thief our hopes are sure to be dashed.

(82,849 posts)They were so busy busting up families, kidnapping and torturing children, and trying to subvert justice that they didn't have the time or the manpower to pick up the man accused of murdering the cute white woman?
There's more than one way to frame this episode to score political points.

(1,867 posts)The alleged killer had been in the area four to seven years and was employed, though they did not disclose the name of his employer. Could be either farm or non-farm work.

(31,261 posts)look toward racists as maybe having been right. You can say that people who this affect are racist to begin with and would not have changed, but that view is somewhat simplistic. When I read earlier today that the woman was murdered, my first thought was to hope that the murderer was not a Black or Hispanic person. The reality is that the murder by an undocumented immigrant sets back immigration reform mightily, because now we have to wade through the smoke screens republicans throw up, and if the wonan' dad become like the dad of the woman who was accidentally shot and killed by an undocumented immigrant in San Francisco, we will be seeing the woman's picture opposing any attempt at sane immigration debate. That is simply the reality at this moment, ignoring it does not make it go away.

(17,426 posts)Democrats aren't for illegal immigration. Democrats are for fixing the frickin broken legal immigration system, treating those that are here like human beings, allowing a path to legal status and citizenship for those that are here and following our laws.
Of course they will try to use this horrible crime to their political advantage...I mean... they are evil pricks. That's what evil pricks do.
Don't help them, and for God's sake don't push this evil shit.
Exploiting tragedies like this are how people got lynched, or Native American children were burned alive in their homes.
The guy who just strangled his wife and two toddlers was a white Christian fundamentalist. Are Retrumplicans going to "lose ground" because of his despicable evil?
