Many Unions Tell Dems No On Convention Cash

The Democrats are hitting up unions — their go-to cash cows — for last-minute donations to help pay for next month’s convention in Charlotte.

The response from some big unions? Tough.

Union leaders insisted from the start that they wouldn’t help fill the piggy bank for this year’s Democratic National Convention after the party picked a labor-hostile location and at the same time made fundraising tougher by banning corporate contributions and capping individual donations. And with the event less than a month away, they’re sticking to their guns...

Heavy hitters like the AFL-CIO, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Laborers’ International Union of North America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers say they won’t be making big money contributions this year.

Other unions are toning down their convention involvement...And some, like the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, have said they are sitting out entirely...

“There was a general disappointment in the selection because of the non-union hotels, the non-union accommodations in North Carolina,” said Chuck Rocha, president of the union consulting firm Solidarity Strategies and former political director of the United Steelworkers union.

Meanwhile, the american federation of teachers gave the party $1.2 million while arne duncan continues to ax their jobs.

stupid is as stupid does.

Labor and President Obama haven’t always seen to eye. But AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka says he couldn’t be happier with the way the campaign is shaping up.

“I think the president’s making the case right now that he should be making — that this is about two different types of economy,” Trumka told reporters Thursday at a breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor.

It wasn’t always this way. After Republicans took over the House in 2010, the White House pivoted to deficit reduction, agreeing to major spending cuts as the GOP threatened to shut down the government — or worse. Trumka and other labor officials were put off by the new emphasis on trimming government and warned it was a political as well as economically dangerous.

But last year, with the recovery unexpectedly slowing down and Democrats convinced there was no overcoming the Republican Party’s anti-tax fervor, Obama launched a new legislative push for the American Jobs Act, a bill designed to stimulate the economy with tax cuts, relief for state government and infrastructure investments.

labor friendly

In this election their is no ambiguity, they repukes have made it very clear they want to destroy unions completely. What happened in Florida and Wisconsin is only the beginning

They had better think hard and fast

We've been taken advantage of for far too long by blue dog, third way assholes that have sucked the corporate cock and thrown us to the dogs. A strong message needs to be sent. Get back on the right path or be abandoned.

The unions blew their money in Wisconsin chasing Gov Walker plus the unemployment rate is still sky high and many of their members are out of work......why WOULD they support this administration...doesn't do any good to have an insanely high union wage without a job...does it?

When you are on a diet, sooner or later over time some saturated fat is going to slip into a meal, unintentionally or unavoidable by reason.
Big picture people.
99% pro-union record politicians should not be held to a 1% mistake.
These people are just being assholes.
Bet the Presidents standards on unions is stronger than those bitching.

Obama is obviously far far better for union members than the alternative, but he sure as hell doesn't have a "99% pro-union record". No card check. No taking on NAFTA. Supported union-opposed FTAs, including the monster in the works now. Calling unions "assholes" for not sending preciously slim funds to what is essentially a party is absurd.
