Makes you think about about our justice system.

(3,145 posts)Chelsea Manning exposed horrific war crimes which had cost thousands of innocent Iraqi and Afghani men, women and children their lives and was walloped with a 35 year sentence. Some nasty shit was said on here about her.
Reality Winner exposed a much less horrific case of collusion, gets only 5 years and is held up as a travesty of justice.

(17,984 posts)What do you suppose Rump's reaction to Winner is? "Off with her head" is what I would expect.

(3,145 posts)Even if Reality Winner spends every day of her sentence in prison she'll still have served less time than Manning.

(17,984 posts)This is why there needs to be a massive public outcry. However, that won't happen because I doubt that more than 10% of the nation even remember who Reality Winner is and what she did.

(3,145 posts)I don't think she should have received more than probation or community service. Exactly the same way I felt about Manning.
You're absolutely right: There does need to be a hue and cry in Winner's favor and hopefully a Dem president in 2021 will pardon her.

(17,984 posts)My beef with the situation is that Winner is going to prison for trying to expose the Russian hacking that put Rump in office. Meanwhile, Rump is seemingly untouchable (yes, I'm still pessimistic about him doing any time). If Winner must spend 5 years in prison, then Rump needs to spend 1,000 years at least. It's a travesty of justice.

Sen. Warner just said yesterday that efforts to safeguard our election systems have been hampered by secretiveness and that more of the reports about hacking into election systems should have been declassified and made public sooner and that too much info is still being withheld from public. So yes, Reality Winner seems to have had good intentions and thought she was a whistleblower trying to provide warning to the public about Russian hacking. But her involvement with Glenn Greenwald and Intercept to release the classified info was serious mistake and she should have known that revealing that info could have compromised our ongoing investigations into Russian interference.
