1. I believe Biden had been down to Arizona several times in last couple of months to comfort McCain.

2. I read that Beau Biden, Joe's son, died of the same brain tumor as McCain.

Note how Biden does not mention that because he is honoring his friend, not making it about himself.

Comforting Meghan when she became upset. They were discussing Beau and she nearly lost it, thinking about her father. He comforted her, talking about his longtime friendship with her father.

They were very close.
