McCain Death More Important To Media Than Mass Shooting

I was working for a couple of hours, and went to DU about 15 minutes ago. Saw that there was a shooting in FL with several dead. Turned the TV to CNN and then MSNBC. It's been non-stop McCain for 15 minutes and counting.

So I came to the conclusion, McCain dying is news. A Mass Shooting is just something that happens every day somewhere in the U.S., and less newsworthy.

2. Of course, there are a lot of variables that go into how the news is covered.

A death of a well-known person on a weekend, like McCain's, is ideal, because you can stretch the coverage to fill lots of empty air that usually happens on weekends. But when breaking news happens, such as a shooting, you don't necessarily have a lot of people you can rely on to report it out.

I must not have been looking at DU 4 hours ago when it happened. Perhaps it is less of a story now since it ended with a dead shooter. I turned it on at the bottom of hour, so I guess they covered it at the top, and then moved on to McCain.

Not sure what that means. Either less dead or more I guess.

There are inaccurate numbers being distributed by
local and national media. This is fluid and as soon as
we have confirmed numbers they will be released.

That suggests the number of dead will increase. Originally media and early police reports said four.
I'm sick of these slaughters

8. I think the media is just following Washington on this one

A big section of the political class is mourning the end of an era, their era. A reminder of a time when Washington didn’t suck so bad. They’re mourning the end of their own time as well as McCain. It’s taking up a lot of oxygen.

and that is at least in part some of the reason for the national divisiveness. There are a whole lot of ex-politicos that now serve as Talking Heads exploring each and every nuance of each and every horse race. Those folks don't come cheap and if they are on the payroll they need to be used for what they can produce which is keeping eyes glued to the Breathless 24/7 Breaking Infotainment Machine that is designed to be on just long enough for you to stay tuned during the ads for drugs you never knew you needed.

10. I'm afraid that we have reached the point that a mass shooting is a "dog bites man" story.

Something that seems to happen every day doesn't seem newsworthy.

We have reached a truly terrible place. It is not shocking that a President lies or that people are shot at a gaming convention.
