McCain Death More Important To Media Than Mass Shooting

I was working for a couple of hours, and went to DU about 15 minutes ago. Saw that there was a shooting in FL with several dead. Turned the TV to CNN and then MSNBC. It's been non-stop McCain for 15 minutes and counting.

So I came to the conclusion, McCain dying is news. A Mass Shooting is just something that happens every day somewhere in the U.S., and less newsworthy.

1. what time did you watch ? it was breaking news when i tuned in

and top of the hour news.

but shootings wil usually not get as much coverage these days since its so "normal" in this country.

2. Of course, there are a lot of variables that go into how the news is covered.

A death of a well-known person on a weekend, like McCain's, is ideal, because you can stretch the coverage to fill lots of empty air that usually happens on weekends. But when breaking news happens, such as a shooting, you don't necessarily have a lot of people you can rely on to report it out.

3. Did Not Realize It Happened Hours Ago

I must not have been looking at DU 4 hours ago when it happened. Perhaps it is less of a story now since it ended with a dead shooter. I turned it on at the bottom of hour, so I guess they covered it at the top, and then moved on to McCain.

4. Police Department Just Tweeted That News Media Has Incorrect Numbers

Not sure what that means. Either less dead or more I guess.

That suggests the number of dead will increase. Originally media and early police reports said four.

A big section of the political class is mourning the end of an era, their era. A reminder of a time when Washington didn’t suck so bad. They’re mourning the end of their own time as well as McCain. It’s taking up a lot of oxygen.

and that is at least in part some of the reason for the national divisiveness. There are a whole lot of ex-politicos that now serve as Talking Heads exploring each and every nuance of each and every horse race.
