I think Trump may be, in addn to other things, a sadist.

I hate to say it. He is so many things that are bad. Narcissistic, egotistical, arrogant, unintelligent, uninformed, rash, mean, juvenile, vindictive, petty, no respect for truth, dishonorable, a blowhard, a bully, power hungry.

But it strikes me, finally, that he may actually be sadistic.

SADIST. a person who derives pleasure, especially sexual gratification, from inflicting pain or humiliation on others.

Vanity Fair's article from today says that someone reports that Trump got joy from pulling Brennan's security clearance. And that quashing praise of McCain's service and then raising the flags to full mast also fell into that category. https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2018/08/donald-trump-nuts-rejects-war-council-intervention-goes-it-alone

Thinking back on all the times (the ones I remember) of how he called people names, even ordinary citizens with no power to fight back, damaged careers (Sen. Flake of AZ & others), the children in cages, the immigrants forced to give up their plea for amnesty in exchane for seeing their children again, put people in charge of agencies for the purpose of dismantling those depts & agencies, and all the rest. What would be the purpose? It strikes me that it may be as simple as...it gives him joy. It gives him pleasure to see hurt, pain, and damage that he causes. It makes him feel powerful?

It gives him joy to damage a career or humiliate someone. That would explain some of the things he's done. But was he always that way? Someone needs to do a psych profile on him after this is all over.

Or is this too dramatic? Too extreme? Still, it seems to fit.

I find it hard to believe that he ever beat up anyone. Unless he gave it a shot, knowing the teacher couldn't do anything because of Trump's powerful, mean father. But maybe he was more physical than I read.

For instance...I saw a Mueller - Trump comparison. Mueller served with honors in the military, while Trump was on the bowling team.

I can see him being part of a violent group, and participating a bit, but not one of the leading violent ones. He's a chicken, I think, & would worry about getting his pretty face damaged. He was known as a ladies guy.

Taking away food from poor folks, even school meals. Taking away healthcare and just letting people die. Increasing allowable levels of toxins and carcinogens that will affect millions of people. And then there's the hundreds of children he abducted right out of the parent's arms and made into orphans, even for a sadist, that was really special.

… so much as a lessening of his own pain.

If he humiliates someone, it makes him feel superior to them.

If he spews vitriol at someone, it makes him feel less vulnerable himself.

If he seeks revenge on someone, it makes him feel “safe”, because he thinks he’s incapacitated an enemy who had the power to hurt him.

Sadly, I’ve known a couple of men like this. They don’t really derive pleasure from anything. Even when they are praised, they don’t enjoy it – because they’re too busy assessing that the praise wasn’t high enough, the applause wasn’t loud enough, the accolades weren’t as worshipful as they should have been.

IMHO, Donald Trump has no capacity for feeling pleasure – or happiness.

I was regarding it more as vindictiveness, meanness. But it occurred to me that it's more than that. He actually gets pleasure from it. But you're saying it's part of his ego issue. Which makes sense.

In addition, he has at least two people in his orbit who literally take pleasure in ripping little kids from their parents' arms and sticking them in cages: Jeff Sessions and Stephen Miller, whose idea it was.

isn’t there a story out there about his idea of fun which involved getting an employee or business associate on the phone and then calling the mans wife and hitting on her over the phone, while her husband is listening on the other line?

Or maybe getting the wife to come see him in person while he has the husband listening in on speaker phone as he hits on her?

Real sick stuff. Humiliation, sexual harassment and potentially marital ending hi-jinx. What fun.

He’s one sick puppy, no doubt about that.

...actually it makes sense..... a bit of masochism, humiliation and subordination. But since hes sleeping and eating alone I bet that desire has been replaced with self humillation...diaper wearing, thumb sucking..pacifier. And overcompensating for this by acting all blustery, sadistic and 'tough'.

Malignant narcissism is a psychological syndrome comprising an extreme mix of narcissism, antisocial behavior, aggression, and sadism. Grandiose, and always ready to raise hostility levels, the malignant narcissist undermines families and organizations in which they are involved, and dehumanizes the people with whom they associate.

skip

While narcissists are common, malignant narcissists are less common. A notable difference between the two is the feature of sadism, or the gratuitous enjoyment of the pain of others. A narcissist will deliberately damage other people in pursuit of their own selfish desires, but may regret and will in some circumstances show remorse for doing so, while a malignant narcissist will harm others and enjoy doing so, showing little empathy or regret for the damage they have caused.
