Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI hear that Veterans seem to be turning against the cheeto chancre - At last
Why now seems an obvious question given 45's actions and rhetoric for the last 2+ years. Here is how I see it:
For way too many vets, the Khans were fair game because brown and Muslim doesn't count as a vet.
Tammy Duckworth? Women aren't really vets and she's a DEM...
But when it comes to McCain?
How dare he disrespect an old white Republican MAN!!!
That is why IMHO that this slap at vets was actually noticed and all the others went unremarked.
I wish my comrades in the VFW/Legion crowed were less reactionary, and if the vet groups better reflected the veteran population we would have a good chance of making that true.
At least in cities and in majority AA or Hispanic posts there is push back against Trumpism. I wish there were more minority vets joining the service organizations like the VFW or American Legion, AMVETS etc.
Minorities serve in numbers much greater than their percentage of the population but are very under represented within veterans service organizations.
Women make up about 1 in 5 service members but are scarce in the service organizations nationwide.
Change those demographics and the national conversation would change as well.

(13,191 posts)Lock stock and barrel and are probably lost forever.
But they are dying out and there is a generation of soldiers that served under Obama that are separating/retiring from today through the next dozen years or so.
I will never say that the military will become a liberal haven, but the extreme trumpist white nationalist nihilism can be pruned back.
There are a bunch of Vets on this site (often accused of being DINOs or centrists or something) that count themselves as solid Democrats.
We exist, and I want us to be a louder voice in the National debate

(65,143 posts)But, veteran organization leadership is still out there doing the brainwashing and Limpbrain is still on AFR
I do wish I felt as optimistic, but I can't
This in spite of having an ex-Marine BiL who loathes PINO

(7,447 posts)Explain. I simply have expressed my experience with my fellow members of the military and their attitudes towards her. I said nothing about my attitude, but since apparently it's required I wholeheartedly supported her in both the primary and GE.

By pretty wide numbers.

No. Your wrong.
You are used to hearing only from the whitest loudest most reactionary segment of us.
Which is why I want more female and gay and POC vets to speak up and join the powerful lobbying forces that service orgs represent.

(7,447 posts)I've heard it from white and brown (most AAs like me in the military are not Trump supporters).
I've heard from Officers and Enlisted.
I've heard it from FORSCOM type units and TRADOC type units.
So if your quibble is inserting the word "most" then feel free to insert the word "most."
Changes my meaning not much at all.

Be honest? I don't care how many assumptions were made, excuses tallied or expectations lost. If disparaging McCain and dishonoring his death is the event that rouses people from their slumber, rattles their bamboozled state-of-mind, I won't criticize. Let's hope that this distaste for the Trumpster's pettiness and vindictiveness in all things McCain holds up.
I will say this--my father was an old Navy man--South Pacific, WWII. He might slam the military but no civilian was allowed to do that. If you kicked one Navy man, you kicked them all. Plus? Navy guys and I suspect military guys in general tend not to forget or forgive. Captain BoneSpurs made a huge mistake!

(51,036 posts)They are losing their numbers to the minorities and women and what they need to do is vote.
Vet orgs are still losing membership in their orgs... right? If so, they are just dwindling.

(13,191 posts)And the orginizations ate flailing trying to attract members.
Sadly, it's a classic "old white men try to atttact young non-white folks" situation.
The leadership is calcified.
