The White House on Friday insisted that trade negotiations with Canada are moving forward after The Toronto Star published inflammatory off-the-record remarks President Donald Trump allegedly made about the longtime U.S. partner.
The Toronto Star on Friday printed the
comments in which Trump allegedly said he will only make a deal with Canada that is "totally on our terms." The remarks were purportedly made to Bloomberg News during its
interview with Trump at the White House on Thursday.
"The Canadian and American negotiators continue to work on reaching a win-win deal that benefits both countries, White House deputy press secretary Lindsay Walters said in a statement after the remarks were made public.
The Trump administration is currently meeting with Canadian officials after the U.S. made a preliminary two-way deal with Mexico earlier this week to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement.
