Des Moines Register Runs Don Jr. Article, Fact Checks Him Mid-Column

by Tamar Auber | Aug 31st, 2018, 8:31 pm

On Friday, the Des Moines Register ran an editorial from First Son Donald Trump Jr. The title read, “Democrats’ reaction to Mollie Tibbetts‘ death is heartless, despicable.”

In the article, Trump Jr. claimed Sen. Elizabeth Warren — a frequent target of his POTUS dad’s jabs, “apparently believes that illegal alien parents being separated from their children is a bigger problem than American parents having to bury theirs.”

Here is an excerpt of what Trump Jr. wrote in the op-ed:

The mask is off and the true radical face of the Democrats has been exposed. They are seemingly more concerned with protecting their radical open-borders agenda than the lives of innocent Americans.

When asked about Mollie’s murder, Sen. Elizabeth Warren — who is for some reason considered a leading contender for the Democrats’ 2020 ticket — played down the killing and said the focus should be on the “real problems” of our immigration system, such as the separation of families at our border.

Think about that for a minute. She apparently believes that illegal alien parents being separated from their children is a bigger problem than American parents having to bury theirs.

The editors of the Register, however, did not allow Trump Jr.’s claims to simply go unchecked. Instead, in an unusual move, they interjected this editors’ note, mid-column:

Editors’ note: Here’s what Warren said on CNN: “I’m so sorry for the family here, and I know this is hard not only for her family, but for people in her community, the people throughout Iowa. But one of the things we have to remember is we need an immigration system that is effective, that focuses on where real problems are.” In the same interview, speaking about the separation of children from their parents, she said, “I think we need immigration laws that focus on people who pose a real threat and I don’t think mamas and babies are the place we should be spending our resources.”

The editors likewise fact-checked other claims made by Trump Jr, writing at one point, “Fact check: Here are the facts on immigrants committing crimes in US.”

that they plan to ask. With links to facts ready to go IF they get an alternative fact answer on a topic they will be discussing.

That or just an assistant with an ipad on Google sitting beside.

How many times have you pulled your hair out watching some CNN or even MSNBC pundit just sit there looking like a deer in headlights as some GOP or Trump apologist rattle off two...three...five...easily rebuffed lies in a row. Even if they say, "I don't know if that's true, but...." THAT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH! Because the Republican guest just says "It IS true!" and carries on with a couple more lies to add on. And any viewer, especially one less politically active or aware, sees it as a she said, he said, situation where no one is proved wrong.

But if they had to do it (and I suspect they had no choice in the matter), they deserve national recognition for doing what they did. It is sure to bring a reprimand, although if they were 100% factual, they can always say they they were doing their duty as laid out in their job description.

Of course, in the future, their overlord will no doubt lay down the following rule:

I for one, would greatly enjoy seeing all print publications, radio stations, TV media do the same thing. Using Warren’s words in this case, or any original source’s words, is irrefutable truth. By all means, insert fact checks directly into the body of the text. The media needs to step it up a notch or three to counter the vomit being emanated by highly biased and partisan sources from either side.

... “You do not get to usurp Mollie and her legacy for your racist, false narrative now that she is no longer with us. We hereby reclaim our Mollie.”

“Yes, <Rivera> is an immigrant to this country, with uncertainty as to his legal status. But it matters not,” Tibbetts Murphy added. “He could have been a citizen, born in this country; he could have been an older, white man from anywhere … He is a man who felt entitled to impose himself on Mollie’s life, without consequence … Mollie was murdered because a man denied her right to say no” ...

REKHA BASU
Des Moines Register columnist

... I wrote a piece a year after Tammy Zywicki was killed, prompted by the discovery of a 36-year-old woman’s body in a Des Moines area hotel. She was in the process of moving to Des Moines from Denver to begin a supervisory job. Once again, it underscored our precarious footing as women in a world dotted with unforeseeable risks.

“In the march for equal rights between the sexes, women’s safety remains an arena of profound sexual inequality, a realm where inroads made by women in work and political office find no reflection,” said the column published Aug. 27, 1993. “Threats to safety are a growing fact of life for everyone, but are an integral part of the way women experience the world. No woman is immune to assault, at home or on the street, in public places or in private ones.”

Yet rather than focus on reducing violence against women, some top Republicans, from President Donald Trump to Iowa’s Gov. Kim Reynolds and Sen. Joni Ernst, had another agenda. They rushed to blame arrested suspect Cristhian Bahena Rivera’s immigration status, which itself remains unclear. The state Division of Criminal Investigation called him an illegal immigrant. But his lawyer said he was in the country legally, and his employer, Craig Lang of Yarrabee Farms, said his legal status had been verified, but later said he had been hired under a different name ...

... two to three women are killed each day in the U.S. by an intimate partner, according to the Violence Prevention Center, and yet you’ll never know the names of the victims because their deaths won’t come close to generating the wall-to-wall coverage focusing on the death of Mollie Tibbetts ...

... Samantha Lucas, a second cousin of Tibbets, said this to CNN: “She would not want (her death) to be used as fuel against undocumented immigrants” ...

... ”At any given time, there are tens of thousands of Americans categorized as ‘missing’ by law enforcement. However, only a fraction of those individuals receive news coverage, leading some commentators to hypothesize that missing persons with certain characteristics are more likely to garner media attention than others: namely, white women and girls” ...

MINUTES after a pair of damaging stories about US President Donald Trump and his former associates broke this week ...
A network of Russia-linked Twitter accounts began blitz-tweeting news that the 20-year-old Tibbetts’ murderer was an “illegal immigrant” on Tuesday afternoon, the New York Post reported.

The Russian tweetstorm happened right after Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, was convicted of bank and tax fraud and Trump’s former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, implicated the president in a campaign finance felony.

The thousands of tweets were “an apparent attempt to divert attention from explosive news surrounding Donald Trump and his former associates,” the outlet reported ...
