(62,536 posts)She probably thought "man if I did the sign that people are upset about it'd be HILARIOUS and people would post about it EVERYWHERE!" I'm sure this is making the rounds on FB as we speak.
brush
(61,033 posts)That's some seriously, devious, racist sh_t to be joking about.
RhodeIslandOne
(5,042 posts)Seeing as it's a common gesture for almost anyone to make an "OK" sign, some have theorized the right is trying to get a meme going to "own the libs" by laying the seeds that it somehow means "white power" when it really doesn't, or at least, not until the alt-right decided it did.
brush
(61,033 posts)co-opted the once "ok" sign into their white power sign, just as they did the PePe the frog character.
It's not in dispute at all except for those who want it to be.
RhodeIslandOne
(5,042 posts)They could have co-opted "thumbs up" too. Would you have automatically started screaming at people for that too? What about a handshake? How about blinking? What fucking gesture are you going to say "NO!!!! YOU DON'T GET TO OWN THAT!!!"
The alt-right is playing mind games on us. They are taking common everyday things in hopes that when we see them, we try to label them as racist and look like idiots. Did you know they wanted to do it with the rainbow flag??? Do you think we should condemn the rainbow flag pre-emptively right now just because they thought of making it a white power symbol???? Obviously if they thought it up, it must now be a white power symbol, right? And we must condemn it, right?
By the way, none of this has to do with me denying what she's doing. She's clearly "throwing up a sign" to someone for attention. Steven Miller, Bannon, who the fuck knows. No one holds their arms like that. She's probably getting excited at the idea Twitter is calling her out so she can laugh it off and gaslight everyone that's not what she's up to. I see someone already posted she's the granddaughter of Polish Jews. She can milk the outrage and get a huge laugh off of it at the same time. These are sick, sick people.

(61,033 posts)have gotten doxxed because their victims have turned their cell phones on them and recorded their racism and unloaded the videos to the internet?
Many soon lost their jobs after twitter detectives, mostly on black twitter, discovered their identity quickly and doxxed them. They soon lost their jobs after being exposed.
Let's see if that happens to this white power sigh flashing dimwit who seems to think she's outsmarting people.
And yes I have watched but whether or not she will get doxxed/or be in any way affected by people who likely share her views/or care is quite another matter

(62,536 posts)I doubt that she sits in a circle conspiring with other super high level ultra nationalist pro Hitler types to take over the world.
But the idea that the "signal" is out there is enough to district and muddle the waters.
Of course the idea that they're feeding it means that they ideologically are racist motherfuckers, but it just shows their callous nature more than anything. It's like when they purposefully wave to a crowd and let the Hitler salute linger for just a tiny bit. They know when you watch the video of it it'll look plain as day, but someone will take a picture of it, and they'll laugh about it.
It's mind games. They've been doing this shit for years.
But yes it is 100% intentional.

(113,973 posts)The woman sitting behind Judge Brett Kavanaugh is becoming a Twitter star as she has been accused of smirking when Democrats speak and looking smug. The woman has been identified as Zina Bash, 36. Bash was sitting directly behind Kavanaugh during the first day of his Supreme Court confirmation hearing on September 4. The hearing has been subjected to protests from sitting Democrats on the committee as well as vocal protesters who have tried to shut down proceedings. Some protesters have even invoked the popular Hulu TV series, The Handmaids Tale.
Bash is a seasoned judicial and political mover in the nations capital. She has worked in D.C. since 2007, for Kavanaugh as well as Senator John Cornyn. In addition, Bash was a director on Ted Cruzs ill-fated presidential campaign in 2016.

(22,413 posts)More realistically, her smug look makes her very unattractive.
I bring up her looks because she supposedly was considered one of the 50 most attractive people in D.C. That's a low bar but she doesn't make it, in my book.
I also saw a tweet asking who is that beautiful woman behind Kavanaugh.
I don't see it.

Attorney General Ken Paxton today named Zina Bash senior counsel on the executive leadership team of his office. Previously, Bash served in the Trump administration as Special Assistant to the President for regulatory reform, legal and immigration policy.
Zina is an outstanding and higly-respected attorney whose extensive legal and policy experience in both the public and private sectors will make her a valuable addition to my executive team, Attorney General Paxton said. Im confident Zina will work every day to uphold the rule of law and improve the lives of Texans.
Over the years, Bash has held a variety of positions in business, law and government, including as deputy director of policy and communications for U.S. Senator Ted Cruzs presidential campaign and senior counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee in U.S. Senator John Cornyns office. She also practiced law as an appellate attorney at international law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP and was formerly executive vice president of operations and business development at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance in Edinburg.
Bash earned a bachelors degree from Harvard College, a law degree from Harvard Law School and an M.B.A. from the University of Pennsylvanias Wharton School. She was a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito and to Judge Brett Kavanaugh of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Bash was born in Monterrey, Mexico, and grew up in McAllen. Her husband, John, currently serves as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas, the top prosecutor of federal crimes in the region that includes Austin.

(9,527 posts)According to the prominent anti-hate group the Anti-Defamation League, the idea that the hand gesture signifies white supremacist sympathies started as an Internet hoax:
The OK hand gesture hoax originated in February 2017 when an anonymous 4channer announced Operation O-KKK, telling other members that we must flood Twitter and other social media websites claiming that the OK hand sign is a symbol of white supremacy. The user even provided a helpful graphic showing how the letters WP (for white power) could be traced within an OK gesture. The originator and others also suggested useful hashtags to help spread the hoax, such as #PowerHandPrivilege and #NotOkay. Leftists have dug so deep down into their lunacy, wrote the poster, We must force [them] to dig more, until the rest of society aint going anywhere near that s***.
People are often eager to believe what they want to believe.

(14,090 posts)Zina Bash was a member of Donald Trump's presidential transition team, a group of advisors tasked with recommending presidential appointments for the incoming administration.[1]
Bash was a member of Donald Trump's presidential transition team. The transition team was a group of around 100 aides, policy experts, government affairs officials, and former government officials who were tasked with vetting, interviewing, and recommending individuals for top cabinet and staff roles in Trump's administration. She was part of the Department of Justice landing team.

(5,969 posts)She might be a deplorable but this is getting ridiculous. Even ignoring the question whether it is indeed a sign used by white supremacists, in this case, it's not even the supposed gesture. The thumb and index finger don't meet and form the supposed p and only two of the other three fingers are extended.
I tried this pose. It's not even unnatural or uncomfortable.
