Right winger struggles with supporting his girlfriend's decision to use Medicare for asthma...

Found this on one of their forums this morning. What a sad, deluded state of mind you have to be in to be one of these people.

I have always been against any type of government assistance of any kind and she has grown up in a family where it is ok i am 20 years old in college working part time and she is 18 years old waiting a little bit for college so that i can get my degree while she can work full time. we are just moving out to get are first homes we both work at mcdonalds and have just enough of a budget to pay rent and other bills. she has asthma and needs an inhaler but I am highly against government assistance because that's what the lazy and the democrats do.
Who would i be to say you don't need government assistance when my own girlfriend uses it?

In fact, if he is truly a conservative, he should do what conservative spokeswoman Dr. Laura would tell him.

1) Marry her or get out. No getting milk without buying the cow is allowed.

2) Get a second job to support her medicine

Dr. Laura would say you are not much of a man (at least from a conservative perspective. We democrats tend to not hold things like needing health care against people and would likely disagree.)

(ASSuming the Daily Paul post in question isn't a troll post, which I suspect it is)

It is the necessary consequence of his belief system that he should let her sink or swim - survive on her own, or die of an asthma attack.

It is inhumane for us, however, to actually suggest that he do so, and risk a human life for his end, or potentially for our entertainment.

I hope she gets the care she needs, however she can get it.

Edit: I don't deny laughing at the prospect of Conservatives dying for their values. It's just not funny if it actually happens...

that someone would take that literally. Being I have asthma and know that my inhaler could save my life, this guy's story really hit home for me.

As far as conservatives "dying for their values", I'm inclined to think they are generally all talk. If misfortune should come their way, they tend to be the first ones to take advantage of every program available. Unlike the lazy and shiftless, THEY are entitled because they paid into the system, blah, blah, blah. I've heard it before and I'm always amazed that they so rarely see their own hypocrisy.

The evil is in the theft, not in reclaiming what was stolen.

Take back all you can from the system that has enslaved you your whole life.

And don't ever tell someone to not claim what is theirs. Fight the theft (taxation), and in the meantime claim back all that you can.

here on DU. It's not a valid way to contribute to the discussion.

At least this is what one DUer (a suspiciously new one) recently told me when we were talking about mental illness. Apparently only statistics and research and published articles give us valid information.

to the core of her soul - and she was absolutely appalled and disgusted with the American idea that needed healthcare had to be paid for even if it was an absolute necessity and the person couldn't afford it. This was patently immoral. The notion of not providing needed healthcare to people who are ill is some sort of craven and depraved notion that has somehow been sold to major sections of the American public - a notion way too extreme for conservatives of any other democracy

you said something very very important:

Only to find out that things aren't always black/white like I had been taught.

I'm still re-evaluating my political beliefs, but personal experience has taught me the value of social programs.

75. A few reasons...

First, it's not always that easy to shed your childhood teachings. When you have an explanation for something given to you, sometimes you have to experience why it's not necessarily a good explanation.

Second, I'm a bit of a recluse. I spent more time doing my job, doing my studies, and spending time at home with my family. Not really much observation of society was going on.

Third, I wasn't really interested in politics. I just recently started joining in on discussions to hear other viewpoints.

That's why I needed "personal experience".

The right winger is an idiot, but I am also confused. Medicare is for those 65 or older, and he is 20 years old?

Is he dating a person 45 years older than himself, or did he mean Medicare?

These are safety net programs. What does he want people to die. What an immoral an unethical bastard

If he's so against it, then maybe he should take a full time job to pay for it rather than live off her dole.

Most likely, when it's her turn for college, he'll find some excuse to make her skip it. Guys like that can't handle women with educations OR women who might be more employable than they are.

is just fine with them? Why wouldn't it be an equal blow to their pride? That is, if they were consistent.

What interests me is if they would help their family. Probably they would think someone else (the rest of society) should, and would come up with justifications why they "can't" help their family members.

Actually, who are you to say it in any circumstance? If you couldn't imagine circumstances like the one your girlfriend is in, then you really haven't thought about it very much and ought to try giving it some thought before passing judgement on "those people."

"that's what the lazy and the democrats do"

No dude, that's what people with serious health problems who can't afford their medicine do.

I'd bet if it was him with the problem, and he couldn't afford the treatment, he'd find a way to justify it to himself. His girlfriend... well ideology is more important than girlfriends. You can always get a new girlfriend.

on unemployment benefits. I can't imagine every unemployed person is a Democrat. Do the Repubs not file for unemployment bennies out of principle? I bet somewhere in the US, registered Repubs collect food stamps, probably the same one's collecting unemployment.

People who think like this kid live in a bubble of, apparently, their parents and own making while listening to Faux news tell them that the only people who get government assistance are Dems and those dark skinned folks. If the grease from the french fry fryer burns this dude, I don't want him collecting worker's comp because that would be taking government assistance, right?
