FLIPPABLE: Rita Lucido for TX-SD17

A lifelong Texan, nonprofit leader, and outspoken advocate for our communities, Rita is the kind of bold leader we need fighting for us in the Texas State Senate.

As a trusted, no-nonsense family attorney of 35 years, Board Member of the Texas Civil Rights Project, the Houston Area Women’s Center, and Former Board Chair of Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, Rita has dedicated her entire career to standing up for Texans, and is ready to bring that experience to deliver real solutions for our community in Austin.

Rita Lucido believes that Texas can be even better. That we can provide a better education for our children and that we can build smart infrastructure to protect our homes and communities from the threat of flooding.

Rita’s commitment to intelligent governance, solving problems and ensuring equality of opportunity extends beyond the courthouse. As a community volunteer, Rita has raised money and served in volunteer leadership roles for organizations ranging from the Houston Area Women’s Center, Texas Civil Rights Project, AVANCE Support and Education Program-Houston, DiverseWorks, and Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast.

As the rains from Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, Rita was among the first volunteers to show up at the shelter at the George R. Brown Convention Center on the morning of August 28th. The administration of the shelter at GRB was a beautiful example of community cooperation and Rita was proud to be asked to work with the Mayor’s office at the shelter coordinating legal services. Rita’s efforts were recognized by the Houston Bar Association. You can read about Rita’s work at the shelter here and in The Houston Lawyer.

As the first member of her immediate family to graduate from college and the grandchild of Italian immigrants, Rita understands the importance of education in achieving the American Dream. Growing up in Dallas, Rita attended Catholic schools, graduated from the Ursuline Academy, and went on to get her BA from Trinity University in San Antonio. Rita earned her law degree from the University of Houston in 1982 and has called Houston home ever since. Rita is married to Phillip Costa, and has one step-daughter, Leigh Costa.

Rita is an American Leadership Forum Senior Fellow.

She has been honored by both Houston Area Women’s Center and Planned Parenthood for her exceptional involvement and volunteer dedication.

She is also in one of the Senate districts almost won by Hillary Clinton https://www.texastribune.org/2018/09/13/texas-senate-republican-supermajority/

In this year’s general election, three Republican-held seats are potentially in play — including two in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In one of the three Senate districts, more voters backed Democrat Hillary Clinton than Republican Donald Trump in 2016. In the other two districts, the president’s winning margin was so small, some wonder if they could flip to Democrats in a year when that party appears to have the momentum.

Those three seats are held by Burton of Colleyville, Huffines and Joan Huffman of Houston. Burton, who did not respond to a request for comment, is the only one that will have to navigate a historically competitive general election. In 2014, Burton flipped the seat from a Democrat with a little more than 52 percent of the vote. Two years later, Trump beat Clinton in the district by only half a percentage point.

In Huffman’s district, Trump won by a skinny 0.9 percentage point, while Huffines is running in a district where Clinton edged Trump by 4.6 percentage points.
