Asset Seizure and Forfeiture - Does this mean the government can seize any and all property that Manafort obtained through the criminal activity that he has pleaded guilty to?

(21,922 posts)$46 million dollars in real estate, (including a Trump Tower apartment), bank accounts and life insurance policies. He's wiped out.
There was an interesting point made on one of the cable shows, (sorry, I don't remember which one). Manafort's lawyer made a comment about the safety and security of Manafort's wife and daughters. Most observers interpreted that to mean that Manafort was worried about reprisals from Russian oligarchs or even Putin himself.
Another view is that the lawyer was referring to financial security and safety for Manafort's family. In other words, he didn't have to forfeit all of his assets, just most of them. It seems fair to leave something for his wife who must be in her mid to late 60s. After all, she wasn't the guilty party.
In the end, Manafort is done. Now that Robert Mueller has him in his pocket, it's time to climb another wrung of the ladder to the top of the criminal enterprise. This isn't Mr. Mueller's first rodeo and I've placed my wagers on his success.
He really messed up.
The property subject to forfeiture by PAUL J. MANAFORT, JR., includes, but is not limited to, the following listed assets:

b. The real property and premises commonly known as 29 Howard Street, #4D, New York, New York 10013 (Block 209, Lot 1104), including all appurtenances, improvements, and attachments thereon, and any property traceable thereto;
c. The real property and premises commonly known as 174 Jobs Lane, Water Mill, New York 11976, including all appurtenances, improvements, and attachments thereon, and any property traceable thereto;
d. All funds held in account number XXXXXX0969 at The Federal Savings Bank, and any property traceable thereto;
e. All funds seized from account number XXXXXX1388 at Capital One N.A., and any property traceable thereto; and
f. All funds seized from account number XXXXXX9952 at The Federal Savings Bank, and any property traceable thereto;
g. Northwestern Mutual Universal Life Insurance Policy 18268327, and any property traceable thereto;
h. All funds held in account number XXXX7988 at Charles A. Schwab & Co. Inc., and any property traceable thereto; and

(253 posts)Can you believe this guy has a law degree from Georgetown? It's not like he couldn't have known the potential consequences of his behavior.

(253 posts)own question. I thought the only property the government could seize would be if he forfeited his bail.

(35,454 posts)and a massive amount of people for any number of reasons. There has been a huge outcry because many police depts use forfeiture to supplement their budgets.

(21,922 posts)Besides, mortgages are for little people. Manafort was a 1-percenter.
Regardless, the properties and other assets become the property of the Justice Department. It's a wonderful irony that in getting Manafort's plea agreement and seizure of assets, Robert Mueller has paid for his investigation thus far.
Cost of Team Mueller - everything.... $20million.
