Silver City, N.M. – In a bombshell recording, career politician Yvette Herrell admitted on tape what we already knew: she will put special interests over those of New Mexicans in order to get elected to higher office. In a private meeting with her supporters, Herrell boasted that her position on the national board of directors for the Koch Brothers-backed, DC-based American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC, would open opportunities for her in Washington, D.C.

While serving as a state chairperson for DC-based ALEC, she charged New Mexican taxpayers thousands of dollars to fly Herrell to out-of-state political events where far-right legislators conspire with big money interests to write big business’ dream legislation, like the transferring of millions of acres of federal public lands within New Mexico to the state, a bill that was introduced by Herrell in 2013.

“For someone who wants to ‘drain the swamp’ there's nothing swampier than bragging about your grand plan to get to Washington with taxpayer money AND special interest help,” said Joe Kabourek, Executive Director of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. “Herrell’s involvement with ALEC is disqualifying for a number of reasons, but especially because of the group’s aggressive efforts to transfer and privatize protected federal lands, which most New Mexicans oppose and would greatly harm people who live on tribal lands.”

“But I also wanted to be in a position to transition into a federal seat and I'm - I'm not saying I know all there is to know but I'm telling you this has given me an opportunity to understand the nuances of this district, the challenges both from a policy level on the state side of things and also from the federal level.
Um, I have great - I have great relationships in Washington and of course once Trump got into office, and we see this administration and this cabinet level group that he's appointed, it has been a huge benefit for New Mexico.
I am on the national board of directors for the American Legislative Exchange Council."
