My husband has been working off our farm for the last decade to get insurance since I was unable to get health insurance at any price. He was planning to retire at 63 when he could get Medicare for both of us. Now that age is 65 and there is talk of increasing it to 67 - IF Ryan's plan is not adopted and he just gets a voucher that will not cover insurance costs. I haven't paid enough into Medicare to be covered so once he retires I will have to pay about $400-500 a month for my Medicare.
Chances are we will both have to work to get coverage or pay for alternative coverage. If the ACA is not repealed, the insurance exchanges might provide a path to affordable care, but we live in Florida where pRick Scott is not implementing any of the provisions of the ACA. So until the federal government sets up an exchange for Florida, we're SOL.
At least with my new knees I should be able to work for the first time in twelve years. But it's going to be hard to find a job with my record - self employed for 25 years then semi-retired with numerous health problems for the last twelve years. I may have to start another business just to get some money - HAH!

(34,139 posts)You have to pay it when you are retired. While I was running my business I did not draw a salary so did not pay into Social Security or Medicare. If I had realized what was going on, I would have drawn a salary and invested it back into the business once i paid taxes, SS & Medicare. At the time, my choices seemed reasonable but soon I'll have to pay for the health insurance one way or another.
