Did Trump screw up as per firing Rod Rosenstein?

Did Trump think that his chief of staff, Kelly could fire Rosenstein when he
was in NYC today but he didn't know that only the A.G. and the POTUS can
fire the Assistant Attorney General?

if a president really wants to fire a deputy attorney general, but is out of town, he can have his chief of staff deliver the bad news and draw up the paperwork for him to sign later, or print it out and sign it wherever he is.

the real issue is that firing him would amount to yet another count of obstruction of justice, aside from amping up the nixon comparisons....
