She is afraid of him. Before answering anything she would look at him for approval. As a matter of fact, he just answered questions that were directly addressed to his wife. Maybe I am reading too much but it looked like an abusive behavior and a wife who appeared submissive and terrified. This begs the question regarding his drinking. He was described as violent when drunk . Is he still an alcoholic ?

(2,064 posts)The question is whether he is sober/dry or still drinking.

(4,066 posts)Sure, we are all reading the worst into every little thing about him right now. That is true. I didn't see the interview but what you described certainly does sound like she is an abused wife. If not physically, then mentally. You don't have to be physically violent to kill a person's dignity, self-respect, and will to live.
I was thinking he was too wimpy to be physical but he was a football player. He very well could be a physical and mental abuser.

(11,498 posts)Is she was being the perfect submissive wife. And he looked smug, the tears were his fear of not making the court and getting caught like how Scott Peterson cried.
I dont trust him at all, privileged past used to getting away with stuff.

(16,254 posts)What I'm wondering is could he have misinterpreted the confession process and thought that once he confessed, he was free of whatever he confessed and couldn't be blamed. It was erased from his slate? Never happened?
After seeing the hurt and misery in his wife's eyes, tonight, I hope she sues for divorce and finds someone who will treat her the way she should be treated. She looks miserable.

(11,498 posts)He has probably lied to her and she needs to believe those lies to stay married to him.
I would be willing to bet he feels he is living a clean life now and that makes up for his past that god forgave. He probably has talked himself into believing it was the booze and he would never do those things without it.

When she was asked if the FBI should investigate, she didn't know what to do. She kind of shook her head no, her lips moved as if she was trying to say something, then she sort of shrugged like "I don't know". It seemed clear she had not expected or rehearsed a response to that question being directed to her.

BWS is dangerous primarily because it can lead to what some scholars say is "learned helplessness" -- or psychological paralysis -- where the victim becomes so depressed, defeated, and passive that she believes she is incapable of leaving her abuser."

(6,283 posts)... he will be one for the rest of his life. It can be managed, but he will still be an alcoholic.

(13,776 posts)Although I must admit that if my husband were up for an appointment to the Supreme Court I would be nervous about piping up and screwing it up accidentally. And maybe the prestige is worth all of this to her. Its understandable. After finding out everything shes found out about her husband in the past few days, she deserves something to make it worthwhile.
But the way he answered for her, after explicitly being told that the interviewer wanted to hear from her... that was obnoxious and domineering.
