Can Yale withdraw Kavanaugh's law degree, and if so would he lose his judgeships?

1. Are you kidding? The Ivy League sticks together.

And anyhow, actual degrees are never withdrawn if the student completed their course work and graduated, no matter what heinous things they might have done elsewhere. Honorary degrees can be and are withdrawn, though.

8. There used to be some states in which you could practice

law without a law degree. I don't know if there are any today. Apprenticing with an attorney and passing the Bar exam was one way to become an attorney in those states.

file a complaint against Kavanaugh with whatever State Bar that he holds a Law License. Hopefully the Bar will conduct an investigation of the complaints against him.

First, Yale would not do that and no, it wouldn't affect his positions. He is a member of the Bar. He is a judge. Impeachment is the only way to remove a federal judge.

Work on electing more Democrats, instead of grasping at straws.

13. Yes. Elect more Democrats. I didn't think the straw would give succor.

It wasn't too long ago that anybody could practice medicine without a license also. Still some forms of quackery is allowed.

Also interesting that these types of professions are self-regulated (ABA, AMA, etc.) rather than having a federal (or global) licensing. I guess if you have the power you can make up the rules (witness the Senate.)

7. I don't think the Constitution requires on being a judge much less a lawyer to be on the court.

My Dad said that they should be others as well on the court- great thinkers, perhaps philosophers and not just lawyers.

9. generally speaking, universities only do this on the basis of cheating.

i don't know yale's policies in particular, but if he were found to have cheated on some tests at yale, then they likely could withdraw his degree.

universities generally don't withdraw degrees for anything that happened outside the university context. in this case, maybe if he lied on his original application, though i'm not sure we've heard anything to make us think he did that.


that said, he doesn't need a law degree to be a justice on the supreme court, so it would be a great insult, but in practice, meaningless.
