Born on third base...

One of the things that really bothered me about Kavanaugh's statement is that he got into Yale "on his hard work" alone. That no one gave it to him

Sir, I was born the grandson of poor immigrants. My grandfather worked in the mines. On any time off he had, he did Mason work. . We were poor, and I can assure you, you did NOT work harder than my father or grandfather.

Dad was a teacher. So was mom. We still qualified for food stamps. Dad worked summers and breaks at the sawmill. He worked the butcher shop on the weekends. I paid my own way through college. I worked right along dad or Grandpa. I worked my tail off sir in ways you never had to. Today, I am a scientist considered one of the top in my field. I owe much of it to that little Italian man who went down into hell everyday so his children would.not have to. I'm not so arrogant to think I did this alone. Many sacrifices were made for me to get here. Your hubris disgusts me.

You went to a school of great privilege. You had all opportunity at your disposal. You had the best teachers, the best facilities, the most chances. You still managed to act like an ass.

You were born on third base sir, you did NOT hit a triple. The fact that you cannot see this shows exactly what is wrong with the wealthy in this country.

Signed,

Someone who DID work their tail off

They get taught about how they "worked" so hard for it.

Yet he got into Yale in spite of all that time partying.

When Kavanaugh said he “worked his tail off” when it consisted of mowing a few lawns on the weekend, it disgusts me.
I know too many women who took classes during the day and worked evenings or nights to get through school. There were no “Beach Weeks” for us.

The Right's lack of empathy is unreal. Kavanaugh was near the top of his class, so he definitely worked hard, but he has no concept of how much harder most of the middle class has to work just to get into a half way decent college. What Kavanaugh doesn't get is that if he had worked just as hard as he did, but wasn't born rich and had to go to an average high school, he wouldn't have been going to Yale, he would have probably been looking at a Junior College before trying to go to a State University, that is if he didn't just skip college to go to work in a factory. Nothing wrong that second path at all, it used to lead to the American Dream.

Most people like Kavanaugh have no idea how much easier it was for them and they are clueless of what they owe to luck.

His parents had nothing. His father was disabled, his mother was a hospital janitor.
He was the first kid from the Ukrainian community to graduate from high school.
He worked his way through university sweeping floors.
He ended up with a PhD in Biochemistry from Harvard.
He never forgot where he came from.

Sep 2018

I do not hold it against anyone for being born into a situation of privilege. Nobody chooses their parents. And I also do not doubt that someone born into such a position can indeed work hard to achieve much.

The fatal and damning flaw here is not possessing sufficient introspection to recognize the reality of one’s position. If you cannot recognize the advantages that you’ve been afforded in life, then how can you possibly recognize the disadvantages that others have faced?

And, if you cannot recognize these things, then how on earth are you qualified to be judge of, well, anything?

But what a person accomplishes with their work is an issue of effort. Kavanaugh's privilege and his parents wealth and influence likely meant that he had people clearing obstacles for him all his life, affirmative action for the priviledged (which is far more prevalent in society that the same for the deserving poor). He got grades in high school because of his family. He got into Yale because of his family. He can't realize that the poor Yale classmate that he looked down on worked five times harder than he did to get into his Yale class. He has no understanding or appreciation of such things, that is why he can use a woman's body as a piece of meat and casually discard her body and soul after.

My grandfather too worked in the mines. My mom worked 12 hours shifts as a waitress to keep the rent paid. I worked my way through college on a sewer crew, but I did not get where I am alone. Kavanaugh is an arrogant entitled prick.

Does anyone honestly think she did not have some influence in his education, and grades? John McCain went to the Naval Academy, graduated 895th out of 899 students. His father and grandfather were both admirals in the navy. Little John was well protected when he screwed up and crashed planes. Dubya went to Yale. He showed up at his first interview - drunk. His grades were so poor, the U of Texas would not accept him. Daddy donated a large amount to Yale, and Jr. made it as a student. I would venture to say the drunk Kavenaugh got plenty of help from daddy and Mumsy.

NO.

He got into Yale law because he went to Yale undergrad.

He went to Yale undergrad because he went to an elite prep school. At such schools, one of the things your tuition is paying for is good grades. I know this from family experience.

It's about money, as always.

She had her first child around the time of her 16th birthday. Today she is in her mid 40s and has a Masters degree in clinical nursing and is a hospital administrator. And she is still married to the father of that first child. It's not a path she would recommend to others, but she made it work for her.

That even though he is a falling-down, black-out alcoholic who goofed around all the way through high school and college, he always got straight As, thus enabling him to easily get into Yale on his own with no problems and no connections. Yeah, sure. This is one of the few times when I would withhold judgment (because he is a person who seems to lie even about trivia) until I could see his transcripts and application to Yale Law School.

I wonder if he bagged groceries at Kroger. Or mowed lawns in the neighborhood. Did Kavanaugh pump gas at the local airport for flying lessons, or the equivalent? Did he dig ditches for a gas pipeline construction company during the summers of his college years (and on Christmas and Spring breaks), to help with the college tuition.

At college, did he survey bends on a new cross-country pipeline in the afternoons after a morning of organic chemistry and quantum physics (and work weekends while the swells drank liquor at the football games)? Or get a flight instructor license and teach people to fly for the university's aviation school? I did all of the above, and more.

And, in high school, I bought a Loree oboe with my own earned money. I bought a bass violin with my own earned money (and it earned me more money playing gigs). And I got my private, commercial, and flight instructor pilot licenses with my own earned money. I also paid for a good part of my college tuition, with my own damn money.

Hell, I didn't have time to get in much trouble. My late mother always said, "Idle hands are the devil's workshop."

Then I went to Vietnam.
