“Over the course of 12 months, the U.S. Army discharged more than 500 immigrant enlistees who were recruited across the globe for their language or medical skills and promised a fast track to citizenship in exchange for their service,” the AP reports.

There isn't enough info here to make any kind of judgment on this. The military has been recruiting selected foreign nationals in return for naturalization since the US military existed. If it is only 500, this doesn't reflect a policy change or it we would be talking about a lot more people. I'm guessing there is a specific reason they aren't saying, and it is probably related to vetting.
