Abrams slams GA opponent over 'voter suppression'

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams joins Tapper to discuss her opponent's voter registration laws, which stalled 53,000 voter registrations, Democrats strategy for winning midterms, and the stakes behind her historic election.

1) She points out that the issue with Kemp is his pattern of behavior aimed at suppressing votes. "When you know that what you're doing is having a disproportionate effect on PoC and Women and you do it anyway, that erodes the public trust in the system."

"The miasma of fear that is created through voter suppression is as much about terrifying people about trying to vote as it is about blocking their ability to do so"

2) Stacy repeated talking points on healthcare ( "expanding Medicaid is not "Progressive" but a good economic decision" - in response to Tapper's question about whether her progressive approach is a reflection of your typical Georgia voter )

3) "The best approach for Democrats is to vote and be engaged in politics."

1. What are the dems doing about it?

I'm tired of just complaining and whining. Do something.

2. You have the power to do something i.e. Vote to ensure that Dems control state legislatures.

The gutting of the VRA had an impact as well, which is why voting is important. Republicans are determined to use their power to limit the franchise.

Have you been following the efforts of Abrams and others in this area? Do a google search "Kemp" "Georgia" "Polling Places", and in search tools filter results to one month ago.

Also, a google search for "Lawsuits" and "voter suppression" yields a ton of results.

4. Here, from TheRoot

https://www.theroot.com/is-that-all-you-got-georgia-organizations-were-ready-f-1829702677
Worth a read I think.
snip...."Maybe itís because there are more African Americans and people of color working on the ground in Georgia than in the past; maybe itís the existential threat of Donald Trump; maybe people have just learned their lessons. Whatever the reason, this time, black folks in Georgia are prepared."

snip..."In other words, the Abrams campaign and African-American activists on the ground knew that Kempís voter suppression tricks were coming and were prepared. Their election success map assumes a certain percentage of votes being lost to suppression tactics. On top of that, there are teams of election lawyers in every single competitive county in Georgia ready to strike on behalf of voting rights. Over a million absentee-ballot applications were sent out weeks ago with the idea being that they can be sent in and counted before someone would know theyíve been purged and to avoid any Election Day shenanigans that Kemp is likely to pull."

There are more references online.

I do understand your frustration.

It was a fantastic read. The Democrats were ready for them!

11. POC in the South

Are exhibiting a high level ground game. The Alabama senate race, I suspect, will be seen as the first in a series of steps that wins hearts, minds, votes & government seats.

New sets of eyes looking at 'old problems' and reframing to a new solution.

7. DO something yourself. And I don't mean complain.

That you've noticed that this is happening at all is proof OTHERS are busy, and successfully as far as you go.

So now, DO SOMETHING. You're a citizen, aren't you? Send Abrams or any of the many groups fighting this money. We do. Do calling or texting. We do. And you can also, from anywhere in the nation.

DO something yourself. And I don't mean complain.
From what I've observed, it's always easier to post messages that blame others in our party (whether the blame is deserved or not, and most often NOT) than to become politically active one's self.

10. The fabled "they" and "them," always at fault for all.

From what I've observed, , those prone come in two types: Those hardwired to always whine about others not taking care of them and those who can and often will clean up their act, at least somewhat, if they realize what they've fallen into.

Oh, and of course malicious agents, but they're a special category.

5. I like how she is reframing the healthcare debate

Making it a smart economic policy is a good idea. I always thought it should be framed as a national security issue. The more people who don't have healthcare, the bigger the chance we could have a national epidemic.

14. Agree. Especially with the accelerating disruptions from

global warming and the spread of tropical diseases north, and from around the planet of course.

But it's always made good economic sense in every sphere, including a healthy population, including a healthy workforce that employers don't need to pay directly for.
