They made a deal with Saudi Arabia to sell oil to us during and after WW2. For most of the war the US was the defacto gas station for the Allies.. We depleted our reserves and made the "We will protect you if you give us oil" deal. It was a great windfall for the Saudi's and the US oil companys...... Old habits die hard...
