That cyclical neglect is what keeps many Latinos out of the political process, said Indiana University political science professor Bernard Fraga.
Most of the formal barriers to Latinos participating in the political process have been removed, but a persistent lack of contact may create an understanding that their vote is not important or valued, Fraga said. It tells them that their issues are not important enough to be discussed.
QUESTION:
How much money, people, time would it take for the DNC to get that number from 60 to 95%?
I lived in Texas, lack of direct relatable outreach is one of the main reasons why Texas is ... NOT ... blue right now.

(10,437 posts)jesus christ,
if a latino/hispanic american NEEDS to be contact about registering to vote, how the hell can I care about that? You, as an america gotta GET OFF YOUR ASS, if you care at all, or STFU when they come for you

(90,348 posts)... others are dissuaded from ever thinking of being involved.
I was politically aware before I was able to vote but never thought of how to vote as a last step, there were no classes in school, no nothing ... voting is not like sex... were people just figure it out.
invited me to vote back in the '70's when I was a young, white, middle class female. It was what you did if you didn't want idiots to wreck the place (naive, I know). I do believe in voter drives, etc., but ultimately it's no one's responsibility but your own to get it done. Nowadays, voting is about the easiest government thing you can sign up for. Try filling out a food stamp application, and that's FOOD.

bottom line I can understand how minorities in America aren't as motivated as other cultures to participate in an election environment unless somebody really needs them by the hand to a polling place

(4,268 posts)but then that's why phone banking, door knocking and rallies are required in this country right? Not to mention million$$ spent in regiatration drives. And still, only around 50% of eligible voters vote on a good year no? Not just Latinos, sorry.
If no one is contacting these people, there's a huge opportunity there - and shame on the leadership for not catching this (if accurate) 30 years ago. wtf

(37,748 posts)The concern though, is why there has been zero contact and zero messaging to a huge potential block of Democrats that votes do indeed, count.
That said, regardless of whether you've been contacted or ignored by the party, I think I'll just quietly sit back and have a cigarette when "they come for you..."
Also, if you have to ask why you need to care for someone, I can only suggest getting off the caffeine.... you seem hysterical and irrational about this.

(13,783 posts)... population used to calculate the percentage were un-registered people. It might make a significant difference. In other words, it would be reasonable for people making efforts to get Latinos registered to concentrate on the subset who were not already registered.
I'm not arguing a position one way or the other except to keep up our vigilance on reports of statistics.

(4,268 posts)no one spends any money on phone banking, ads, knocking on doors right??
And still 50% or so of eligible voters vote on a good year.

(14,816 posts)have been contacted to register?
I've never received a call, or an email, or met anyone with a clipboard in a registration drive.
My guess is 60% of the country never has.

(90,348 posts)... or someone knock on their door or a billboard about registering to vote?
Or could it be for some cultures in America those communities aren't reached at the same level as others by even a progressive party?
I lived in the golden triangle DFW,
Not one dem knock but two kGOP knocks with peoples faces that were shocked and scared because they knew the demographics had shifted wildly in those former exurban areas.
Bottom line even if half that number was true that's still bad.
What kind of resources would it take to reach those communities?

(3,259 posts)It's too simple to put it on them.
1) There is a lot of distrust among the Latino community when it comes to political parties.
2) It can often be difficult to keep track of individuals in a community who find themselves moving often.
3) We need to continue to support many of the amazing grassroots organizations who work to mobilize Latinos. That is the most direct path to get them to the polls.
4) The DNC has been doing great work over the last year plus and I doubt five posters on this board have donated to them. Resources are not unlimited and the DNC has had to spend large resources on security. Donate!
