I think soon Ryan and McConnell will turn on Trump because they got their justice on the supreme court and they got their tax cuts for the rich. But when they do turn on Trump, how do you think the deplorable part of Trump's base will react?? They will go bats*it crazy and who knows how they will react! I think McConnell and Ryan are backed into a corner where they have no choice but to support the evil guy in The White House!

(60,189 posts)They could pass a bill saying membership in the Republican Party as a pre-requisite to voting, and Trump would sign it.
Besides, Trump can say all the outrageous shit they want to, but don't dare, and they can pretend to roll their eyes, and say, "yeah, OK, THAT was a little over the top." No, it was no such thing, but while his crazy pronouncements might appeal to the MAGA hat crowd in Skokie, it doesn't appeal to the conservative suburban Republican housewives outside of Des Moines or Memphis. He pleases the nut case crowd, and leaves radical extremists like McConnell to look reasonable by comparison. On their own, their politics come off like Idi Amin, so Trump is just the cover they need to keep doin' their thing.

(844 posts)I think you are wrong about Skokie, Illiniois. While I assume there are some T voters there I suspect there are not many. Way less than there would be in any Republican suburb. Why did you think Skokie has a MAGA hat crowd? Did I miss something?

(40,970 posts)Republicans can't win without Trump's base. They made this bed, now they have to lie in it. For 40+ years the GOP has been courting the racists & loons. Now the nut jobs have taken over the party. In the meantime, McConnell/Ryan got their tax cuts, they are one justice away from controlling the highest court of the land & McConnell is filling the lower courts with young radicals. He bragged that he's making "generational changes to the judiciary." Trump isn't even half way through his term & already the damage is stunning. He'll run again & if the dems are stupid in who they put at the top of the ticket, he could "win" again.
