(16,646 posts)More than half of the working population doesn't have any meaningful 401K savings. Truth is even in the other half, many are in debt TO their 401k.

(25,816 posts)Or stock. Or options.
There are millions that live on the bottom.
I know many. Yet most of the poor folks I know are happy.
A few beers, a few tokes, a little music. Poor people are tough.

(16,646 posts)One of the major myths of the US is that the majority are somehow "well off". They aren't. More than half of the US population have little to no savings and are poorly positioned for anything looking like retirement. It isn't really well understood because the boomers are still retiring with pension plans, although not nearly all of them. SS and medicare is taking care of many as well. But if you look at the population between about 40 and 55, it's a looming disaster. Two major economic down turns in the last 20 years have resulted in a population whose 401K's became bailout funds for unemployment. Unemployment also took away years of contributions and matching.
And don't get me started on the millennials who are so in debt over education, that many will be paying those off instead of making 401k contributions. No small number will reach retirement age with education debt still to be paid.
The middle class has been dismantled and it is only getting worse. The collapse of any defined benefit pension system, in conjunction with the destruction of what pension plans there were through bankruptcy will cause the rise of the "elderly poor" again.

(20,002 posts)corporations converted so many defined pensions into 401Ks? To force working people and their retirement funds to support the stock market?
