<snip>
Would like you to find a human being and believe them when they say Ted Nugent should not be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? I would love to witness that exchange. You would see a person almost melt with guilt because you know they are lying. At the end of the day, its not about me its about the music. James Hetfield said it best when Metallica was inducted: Ted Nugent not being in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a joke. Ted Nugent is rock and roll.

Can we get some support for Mr. Cat Scratch Fever himself here, DU???
Nah, I didn't think so.
David Crosby, what are your feelings about Ted Nugent?

7 songs charted between '76 and '80, none higher than #30. There's a reason he mostly plays county fairs and supermarket grand openings....he sucks and he is not Hall of Fame material.
Meanwhile ABBA charted 20 times, 4 were top 10's including one #1.

(33,643 posts)I'd be willing to bet that Led Zeppelin's list of 'singles' sales are not a whole lot more impressive.
Pretty sure they had no more than 3 singles ever crack the Billboard Top 20, if that ... those being Whole Lotta Love, Trampled Underfoot, and All My Love.
Pink Floyd's list of 'hit singles' would be a bit better by virtue of one huge hit, Another Brick in the Wall Part II, and a minor hit (at the time) Money.
That said, it's friggin OBVIOUS they're both roughly 1,000,000,000X BETTER ... than Nugent was, is, or will be.
Iron Maiden, Slayer, The Smiths, The Cure, and Joy Division/New Order are the biggest snubs to me, at the moment.

Err ... 'album' is what I meant when I said 'record'.
So, I stand slightly corrected, Zep had a #4, #15, #16, and #20 single over the years make top 20. So I guessed 3, and it's really 4, and the 4th was exactly 20 ... I'z WAY off, man ... lol ... And yeah okay only got 1 song right ... but my point remains, even some of the greatest bands ever don't have all that impressive of singles sales.
How many hit singles did Black Sabbath have I wonder?

(42,680 posts)In addition to the singles you list, Zep had three more top ten singles on the separate "US Rock" chart between 1990 and 1997.

Bauhaus/Love and Rockets, Siouxsie, Sisters of Mercy, The Alarm, Duran Duran, The Stone Roses, The Stranglers ... I could go on and on, I suppose ... lol ...
Mostly my later teens/college though, cause in me early teens I was a headbanger/classic rocker ...
So, I got a musical suggestion for ya ... one of my fave albums from 2014 ... it's SOOOOOO freaking 1980's (but good 1980's), playing and songwriting are terrific, listening to it is one long 'spot the influence' game ... this is one of my fave tracks ... I highly recommend headphones ... and high volume.
This will take you back, even though it's only a few years old. And you should check out the whole album, it's seriously ... really good ...
And another from the record I'm quite fond of ... with guest vocals from Jen Goma from Sunny Day In Glasgow
I especially like the 2nd verse of the song ... it's so wistful ... (and no, it's NOT rapey, the song's actually about a religious dude who doesn't put out, but still goes around breaking hearts)
and the touch of his body
so tender and cruel

(1,151 posts)R&B, funk, disco, bossa nova, the Beatles and some singer-songwriters. Came from a big musical family. My brother introduced me to the Police early in their career and I was obsessed for awhile.
When I started buying my own music with baby-sitting money, I progressed from the opposite direction you did. I bought Duran Duran, Nik Kershaw, Talk Talk, Tears for Fears, OMD, General Public, Style Council, Pet Shop Boys...I loved Brit Pop that was rooted in a bit of R&B, no surprise. Then Depeche Mode, Erasure, English Beat (yeah, I knew General Public before English Beat), Bronski Beat and Yaz. Then I got into The Smiths, Cure, Joy Division, New Order, Siouxsie, etc. When I started going out dancing, the industrial/Wax Trax bands were huge: Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, Revolting Cocks, etc.
Loved it all. Still do.
I joke with my friends about what our PBS oldies concerts are going to be like (in the not too distant future).
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)Pet Shop Boys, Depeche/Yaz/Erasure (Vince Clarke, a vet of all 3 bands, is a MASTERFUL pop songwriter, man), and Talk Talk (their later, 'unpopular' stuff is REALLY good actually), in particular.

(33,643 posts)Another newish album you should check out is the debut from the band CHRVCHES, called 'The Bones of What You Believe' ... it's really friggin' good. I'm sure you've heard of them and heard some of their songs, but that album itself ... is a really, really good listen. Esp. for a Vince Clarke fan ...
Their more recent sophomore record is also excellent, but IMHO slightly less impressive, mainly due to it being more consistently 'poppy'. Their debut has some very cool 'darkness' to it ...
See ya 'round.

(42,680 posts)Peformers: This category honors bands or solo artists which demonstrate musical excellence. Such a descriptor includes (but isn't limited to) influence on other performers or genres; length and depth of career and catalog; stylistic innovations; or superior technique and skills.
Nugent's highest charting single only made it to #30 and he's never had a top ten album. Basically, his career (after the Amboy Dukes) last less than ten years. He's been coasting ever since.
He hasn't influenced anything or anyone in the history of rock and roll, imo.

(6,907 posts)I am not one of their fans, and I wasn't at the time, but honestly, it is Duran Duran. If you were alive in the 80s you would have seen how influential they were across wide parts of culture. They were as important to the 80s as someone like the rolling stones were to the 60s, but people can't see that because of baby boomer bias to the grandness of the 60s and because of bias of what is "really" rock and roll. If a person could step back and look at it impartially they clearly should be admitted.

(33,643 posts)Absolutely 100% deserving, and well past-due in fact.
They are seminal, influential, long-lasting, innovative, hugely-popular, with many hits, have been relentlessly touring, and almost 40 years into their career (their first album was 1980), are still selling out rather large venues ... by themselves.
I agree Duran Duran should get in as well, but not before The Cure and The Smiths.
d_r
(6,907 posts)I love the Smiths, don't love Duran Duran, but I think Duran Duran was the "bigger" band. I can sing five albums worth of Smith's by heart and I "know of" maybe 10 Duran Duran songs total, but those songs were all huge "hits" whereas those Smith's albums were deeply loved but by a few.
But yeah the Smith's should be in there. And joy division/new order.

(50,549 posts)You must not have had a radio when you were a kid. They used to play "Cat Scratch Fever" on every station once an hour where I lived. It is such a wonderful song with a catchy riff (seriously, it is a catchy riff) and a fine message about the joys of catching gonorrhea.
Funny war story follows: In November 1993 I bought a little black kitten. Three weeks later I had a painful lump on my leg about six inches down from where they come together at the top. "I guess I better get this checked." The PA runs some tests and comes back with the results: "You have cat scratch fever." I looked at the guy..."you mean that's a real disease?"

Bon Jovi? ELO? Kiss? In for years. Is Donna Summer "Rock"? Is Tupac? Is Miles Davis? People are in for 1 or 2 hit songs (Del Shannon), or backing up Gene Vincent (the Blue Caps). Ted had a legitimate, albeit crass, decade-plus career before assuming his current role of America's resident Gun Nut.

(11,562 posts)and his vile nature, I`m totally with David Crosby on this. Nugent is nowhere near good enough at anything to be the Hall. Cat Scratch Fever is mediocre at best, and it`s the only Nugent song most people can name, if even that.
Arguably, his guitar playing is his `best` of his alleged and minuscule talents....so, if you ever get the chance to ask him, or one of his adherents, find out if they remember when Shawn Lane blew him off the stage...at the age of 15.
Also, James Hetfield is way more brain-damaged than I`d thought.
