Sandra Day O'Connor: I Have Beginning Stages Of Dementia, 'Probably Alzheimer's'

https://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/sandra-day-oconnor-i-have-beginning-stages-of-dimentia-probably-alzheimers

Retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor said Tuesday that she had been diagnosed “with the beginning stages of dementia, probably Alzheimer’s disease.”

O’Connor, the first woman to sit on the court, said in a letter released through the Supreme Court Tuesday that she would “continue living in Phoenix, Arizona, surrounded by dear friends and family. While the final chapter of my life with dementia may be trying, nothing has diminished my gratitude and deep appreciation for the countless blessing in my life.”

No one should have to go through this, with her spouse and now herself.

She could have swung it the other way. She didn't.

And, yes. She is better than Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. But, not by much.

Sounds like several other judges could've voted different as well. Hopefully, you have the same angst for them.

And the guys in FLA who called it for Bush (his cousin) and the mobs that swarmed the press and vote counters afterwards, I hope. I know I try to live error free but there's times I make a bad decision based on hoopla. I'm human though. have a good week.

Now she tells us. More than 12 years after the fact, retired Justice Sandra Day O’Connor said it was probably a mistake for the Supreme Court to hear Bush v. Gore and anoint George W. Bush as president of the United States.

“It took the case and decided it at a time when it was still a big election issue,” Justice O’Connor told the Chicago Tribune editorial board on Friday. “Maybe the court should have said, ‘We’re not going to take it, goodbye.’”

She continued: “Obviously the court did reach a decision and thought it had to reach a decision. It turned out the election authorities in Florida hadn’t done a real good job there and kind of messed it up. And probably the Supreme Court added to the problem at the end of the day.”

The result, she allowed, “stirred up the public” and “gave the court a less than perfect reputation.”

Just as a human being, no one should suffer from dementia. I wish her peace.

For a moment, I blanked when I heard the news, stunned, and forgetting she had retired. That's how hard I was hit at the thought of Doturd having the opportunity to nominate another Justice. As I recall, my first words were "Oh, crap!"

I honestly think I stopped breathing until realizing that she was no longer on the Court. Whew!

May Justice O'Conner still have some pleasant and entertaining days while she can still enjoy them.
