I was watching him on 'The View', this morning and it dawned on me that his vote was a 'quid pro quo' made on the promise of support for his plan to primary trump*.
I might be naive but I strongly suspect that, should the midterms flip the House and (or come close to) the Senate, at least SOME of the cowardly moderates in the GOP will be shaken enough to grow something resembling a spine. And, by the 2020 campaign season, the lies being told and the damage being done by the current administration is going to be far harder for voters to ignore.
If not, I am convinced we are doomed, as a nation.
H2O Man
(73,558 posts)I thought it was obvious that he voted to protect the option of running in 2020. I think it is more of a question of if the nation is indeed doomed, as it appears to be, or if our constitutional democracy can survive.

(7,888 posts)Jeff Flake is not a man of principle. His brand of Republicans brought US the tea party and the unmoral majority. He will not run against rumpie. imo
Flipping the House is possible. I will wait until every vote is counted before declaring victory.

(26,267 posts)I try to maintain hope, but it's difficult. These mid terms are going to be the turning point - hopefully in the right direction. My fear is that the GOP, in their desperation to maintain their control, will do anything, whether it is constitutional or not.

(7,888 posts)aspirations. He is not running this year because the rumpie "base" would have dumped him off the ballot.
Yes, we can expect the GOP will continue to commit illegal acts and attempt to destroy Democracy.
has the backbone of a jellyfish... never happen.
When a person shows you that they lack character, believe them.

(26,267 posts)In fact, it might be a detriment.

(819 posts)and you think the deplorables are going to show up for him in the primary?
Nope. He voted for Kavanaugh because he's a republican.

(26,267 posts)I could be wrong, but I'm thinking there are a whole lot of registered Republicans who would relish finding an alternative to trump*.

(819 posts)and we see how well he did. tRump owns the republican party now. They've embraced him.

(26,267 posts)Every reason and hope I've heard for why they voted for him has pretty much been discredited. Eventually those who still have functioning brain cells will have to swallow the truth. I guess we will just have to see how much damage GOP voters suffer, before 2020.

(17,055 posts)I like Flake well enough. I think he wants to be the new McCain and reach across the isle occasionally.
That seems to be the Arizona way and just maybe Texas is taking notes.
Power 2 the People
(2,437 posts)I'm sure Flake was told point blank, if you don't vote for Kavanaugh you will be shut out of all lobbyist money upon your exit from the senate. The lobbyist millions are the pot of gold at the end of every corrupt Republican rainbow.

(13,424 posts)Flake, like most retiring representatives, seek a lucrative career via lobbying once they leave office. A No vote would have shut him out of pretty much all lucrative Republican lobbying firms as they all strongly backed Kavanaugh.
Flake voting Yes was about money and not about future political positioning.
