It's all about oil: The lessons we're missing from Jamal Khashoggi's murder

"SNIP.....

We can do something – and we might

Longer term, if we do slide past the current rapids, there is a solution. Embracing the rapid electrification of transportation, and replacing oil still used in the power sector, will slash both dependence on oil and the price paid for the crude we still use. The difference between the ambitious 20 percent share of vehicle miles that ABI expects to be electrified by 2030 and the modest 3 percent that OPEC recently forecast is a demand drop of 7.5 million barrels a day, equivalent to three-quarters of Saudi Arabia’s entire production. Add residual and inefficient use of oil to generate power and you could replace the kingdom’s entire production.

The world can do without Saudi oil – but only once it gets serious about electrifying transportation. The risk of Saudi instability should drive policymakers forward.

It’s heartening and symbolic that only a few days after Khashoggi’s brutal murder, the European Union, over vigorous opposition from EU automakers, voted to require a 35 percent reduction in oil consumption by trucks, only a week after setting a similar high bar for light-duty vehicles.

On the other hand, the Trump administration wants to double down on oil dependence, discouraging improvements in the efficiency of the U.S. auto fleet and its electrification.

a IPO on the Saudi Kingdom Wealth Fund which was pulled because of market conditions.

The World Economic Conditions are ripe for collapse with Trump's Sanctions on Iran and It's massive Oil reserves . Secondly,Venezuela whom supplied the bulk of Oil to the East Coast as well as one major now UAE or Saudi owned Refineries, has totally gone away. Why do you think Trump wants to invade Venezuela, capture what he claims is our Oil Fields cause it was the Americans who got their asses kicked out of Country.

Most people with a Education and do pay attention, had this figured out from the start.

and all the major First World nations move completely away from oil, there will still be developing nations which will keep shoveling money in Saudi coffers for the foreseeable future. They'll probably buy up our outmoded oil-based infrastructure and equipment, because they'll be available at fire sale prices.

I mean no doubt the Saudis are part of the denial of climate science so they can sell more oil even though they don't say it out loud. That will sink most of Florida. Look at the Saudì money going around the world to teach wahabiism everywhere. That has led to radicalism. And a lack of women's rights.

can get any dirty deed done that they want, in any country. It's all about the risk vs. reward calculation for them, and frankly, if they no longer have us as customers, they will see themselves free to be completely ruthless with us.

is if the Saudi royal family were eliminated. No, I don't know how we get to that place.

Bottom line is, there's no escaping them at this point, the oil under their butts, combined with their ancient religion has made them into total assholes.

It turned out many of our emergency room residents were Saudis because the Saudis paid their salaries so what public healthcare system would not accept free resident doctors or internists? When our global affaires minister criticized Saudi human rights they threatened to pull all their doctors at once. And all their students at Canadian universities. That has gone quiet now so I guess both sides want to tone it down but it points to one thing: we used to use trade in the West as a way to spread human rights and stop wars. Now the Saudis have turned that maxim on its head where trade is leveraged as cover for human rights abuses and to fight against the evolution of democracies.
