"Only 6% of U.S. Citizens" is still way fucking too much. Geez...

It's amazing that the article never mentions that practically all of these RW fuckers are white:

The Far Right Represents Only 6% of U.S. Citizens, Study Says. 67% Make up the 'Exhausted Majority.'

By GLENN FLEISHMAN October 22, 2018

Researchers looking into political and social divides in America said in a new study that only 6% of American fit the definition of far right, people who feel that America is under threat and they’re the last line of defense in protecting traditional values with strident uncompromising views. On the other end of the political spectrum, the study identified 8% of Americans as “Progressive Activists” on the far left, focused on equity, fairness, and the direction American is taking. Compared to those on the right, this group is more secular and urban, and rejects traditional authority while trying to rectify “historical injustices.”

The study, called “Hidden Tribes,” broke out results into seven categories, with 67% of those surveyed falling into what researchers labeled the “Exhausted Majority.” This largest grouping looks for common ground, has opinions based on situations instead of conforming to strict ideologies—and hates polarization.

The research also compares results from its study with standard demographic categories, such as religious affiliation, gender, stated political affiliation, and race or ethnicity.

Researchers used uniformity of answers to certain core questions to sort out the groupings. This resulted in a single far-left progressive slot (8%), and both the far-right Devoted Conservatives (6%), and a slightly less rigid, but still dogmatic right-wing “Traditional Conservatives” group (19%).

I find it amazing that the article also tries to portray those who are pro-racial equity, pro-fairness, pro-feminism and against police brutality as some kind of far left radicals.

Uhhh, in the left-right dichotomy, Fortune, one thing doesn't equal the other.

in this world is a very small 6%. We can want a world with zero. But 6% is not a large number. It is very small.

And they have a message that resonates with their target audience; ignorant, white people who believe that they're victims.

White people are still the majority of this country. It's not going to take much for these people to act in behalf of these right wing radicals, even if they always don't subscribe to those beliefs. After all, look at how white voter support to Trump embodied a white-lash against eight years of Obama's presidency.

6. I don't think the article is calling the left wing radical

Rather, the takeaway is that that those furthest left live in a totally different world than those furthest right. This is a bad thing in and of itself.

From an embedded tweet:

“We have become a set of tribes, with different codes, values, and even facts. We no longer just disagree; we reject each other’s premises and doubt each other’s motives. We block our ears to diverse perspectives.”

Not listening to diverse perspectives, even those we find totally abhorrent, is dangerous for our country.

I realize this may be a unpopular thing to say on DU. But I wish it weren't.

Exactly what codes, values, facts, premises and motives from that 6% on the right that we can readily accept on the left?

Which of their perspectives that we all can agree on?

7. The article likely misrepresents the study...

I did not read the article but I did a cursory read of the study based on another thread about a week ago. The study posits that the far left 8% is typically isolated and is actually viewed with more concern than the far right which is smaller, but when voting or engaging in policy, almost always combines with typical conservatives to form a good 25% coalition of hardcore conservative support. They also peel off moderates who often join in.

The exhausted majority sound like people who haven't thought about things clearly enough and have a very cursory understanding of American, let alone world history.

Meanwhile, Republicans have moved the Overton Window so damn far to the right that you basically have to be David Duke in order to be considered "far right."

And the media will tell you that the violence-inciting, fear-mongering bigots are the moral equivalent of those crazy equity advocates. What a seriously fucked up society this is.

I particularly like the line about the 19% "Traditional Conservatives" being "slightly less rigid, but still dogmatic."

The very definition of "dogmatic" implies RIGIDITY!

Here's two other synonyms for "dogmatic": AUTHORITARIAN & DICTATORIAL.

I wonder if Fortune has ever interviewed a dictator that they described as "slightly less dictatorial"? NOT.
