(24,709 posts)Bad idea. Owning a weapon and not being well trained to use it poses more of a danger to everyone around that person. There are reams of information citing this fact. Use common sense. Keep your eyes open and pay attention. Dont engage deplorables.

Come on, lets not give in to their fear tactics.
BigGermanGuy
(131 posts)it has been their tactic all along to get us to disarm ourselves?

(88 posts)If you honestly think everyone should be armed in case they attack, then we are no better. You said it before, they are sending bombs and cars, how is a gun going to help you? Spreading more fear isn't going to help this matter.
anarch
(6,536 posts)j/k. agreed, let's not give in to fear..."an armed society is a polite society" is pretty much entirely bullshit, imo. As much as some elements might want to provoke it, the U.S. is not actually in a civil war at this point (except perhaps metaphorically)...I don't see how cannoning up on either side would mitigate the risk, frankly.

(27,609 posts)...it may help against some local redneck (or a group of them) who decide to wage war on liberal traitors among us, identified as those with yard signs for Democratic candidates.
And I dont think the moment where this might happen is that far off. Possibly this November, maybe 2020. But I seriously expect Trump, if defeated for re-election or facing impeachment beforehand, to declare it a left-wing coup and calm on his followers to rise up and put down said coup by force. And, even if only a handful do so, what if one of them lives on your block?
Demwolv
(88 posts)It's already happening. A LGBT club was shot up, a black church was shot up, a woman was run down with a car. It's already happening. Stop the further fear mongering. Stop it. Do you honestly think this country would be better off with political foes armed against each other? Your paranoia and fear of the other side attacking you personally is so out of line it's ridiculous.
As a woman, I fear for my body everyday. Do I carry a gun because there are men out there who potentially want to hurt me? NO, because living in a state of fear every day that anyone anywhere could come out and harm me is absolutely no way to live, and honestly not true. Sure, it's not the smoothest of times we live in, but it is not apocalyptic chaos as some would like you to believe.
Can I make the correct assumption that many of you who are calling for taking up arms are white men? Because you don't know what that daily fear really is? Welcome to the rest of our worlds. Fight with your vote and your voice, not with your guns, minorities have been doing it for decades. I never thought I'd see a liberal forum bogged down with right-wing fear tactics and a call to take up arms. It's disgusting.

(10,252 posts)We don't need to return fear and hatred with fear and hatred. Those people hate and despise us because Rethuglicans have persuaded them that we are who is responsible for their miserable lives. What we need to do is stay focused on electing Dems to bring about change that will improve the lives of everyone. Raise the minimum wage, enact universal healthcare, restore the safety net, eradicate gerrymandering and voter suppression, clean up the environment, repair and upgrade the infrastructure. We need to SHOW the haters with actions that matter that we are not their enemies.

(24,115 posts)There is a false sense of security in this country. People refuse to see or accept what is happening right before their eyes. Fascism is more than taking root in America, it has taken control. You will want a gun when the Brown Shirts try to break your door down because of something you wrote online. We are at that point in America right now, not next year, not next month, but right now. There are groups of Right Wing Trump Terrorists tracking down people online right now. Violence is already happening.
MarvinGardens
(781 posts)While I agree with you and the OP, your post reminds me that we should also secure our homes against criminal acts. They can't break your door down if... they can't break your door down. When I lived in another city, in a higher crime area, rather than move, I had security doors installed, as well as a security system. I slept much better. If they had tried to kick in my doors at night, they would be leaving with a broken foot rather than a gunshot wound. I only wish I had the disposable income now to have those doors put on my current place. But this reminds me that I need to make some (cheaper) home modifications to further secure my home.

(6,536 posts)Moreover, I will not give in to fear of these stupid fucking assholes. They are exposing themselves for who they really have been all along, and their hateful ideology will be firmly rejected by the vast majority of Americans. Eventually, we will win (or these idiots will destroy civilization, we'll all die, and then all our troubles will be over anyway....)
That said, terrorists should be dealt with appropriately.

(1,483 posts)To letting one's mind entertain the worst case scenario.
One benefit is that things are never as bad as one let themselves imagine, which is great for keeping calm.
Perhaps rather than suggesting that the first priority for preparedness be arming oneself -
I would say begin saving a gallon of water per person per day. And don't let your gas tank go down past the halfway point.
But most of all remain calm and aware of your surroundings. (I say as I'm typing a reply to a message board post.)

(781 posts)Stockpile food, water, fuel, and other necessities. Odds are, you won't need them for civil unrest, but they could help out after a natural disaster.
Don't laugh, but I had a modest food stockpile in advance of Y2K, in case supply chains were disrupted. Now we all know it wasn't needed for Y2K, but it helped me in the aftermath of a hurricane just prior to Y2K, and then a freak snowstorm just after.

The RIGHT has been buying up guns and ammo for a long time. They have all of this stuff.
And they are being programmed to hate Liberals and Dems.

(6,496 posts)I'm a parent with two sons ages 16 and 9. I think it is the worst idea in the world to have guns in the house when you have kids. Plus my teenager is impulsive and moody. Just a terrible idea. He got into the alcohol we had locked up because he snuck our keys while we were sleeping once. Yeah, he could certainly do the same thing with guns. I wouldn't get a gun even if I didn't have kids. I'm not scared for myself.

(3,468 posts)Most liberals are already gun owners and enjoy the shooting sports.
Unlike rightwing nitwits, however, we don't make the mistake of linking gun ownership to patriotism, freedom, and liberty.
Our freedom and liberty are protected by the Constitution, its case law, and the rule of law, not guns.
