While I agree with you and the OP, your post reminds me that we should also secure our homes against criminal acts. They can't break your door down if... they can't break your door down. When I lived in another city, in a higher crime area, rather than move, I had security doors installed, as well as a security system. I slept much better. If they had tried to kick in my doors at night, they would be leaving with a broken foot rather than a gunshot wound. I only wish I had the disposable income now to have those doors put on my current place. But this reminds me that I need to make some (cheaper) home modifications to further secure my home.

I'm a parent with two sons ages 16 and 9. I think it is the worst idea in the world to have guns in the house when you have kids. Plus my teenager is impulsive and moody. Just a terrible idea. He got into the alcohol we had locked up because he snuck our keys while we were sleeping once. Yeah, he could certainly do the same thing with guns. I wouldn't get a gun even if I didn't have kids.
