Don't retweet Donald Trump and don't use his language

Don't retweet Donald Trump and don't use his language
https://m.dw.com/en/dont-retweet-donald-trump-and-dont-use-his-language/a-42213110

While Donald Trump's tweets are routinely attacked as false, this often only helps to spread his message, says cognitive linguist George Lakoff. So DW asked him how to best respond to the US president's fiery language.

So how should we react when Trump sends out one of his many agenda-setting tweets?
What you do first is understand what the tweet is doing and what he does not want you to hear. Often there is some actual real news, real truths that he doesn't want you to hear. He wants to control the media. The media should not let him control them. You are not puppets — cut the strings.

So you are saying people should not retweet Trump's tweets and use his language?
Yes, don't retweet him and don't use the language he uses. Use the language that conveys the truth. Truths are complicated. And seasoned reporters in every news outlet know that truths have the following structure: They have a history, a certain structure and if it is an important truth, there is a moral reason why it is important. And you need to tell what that moral reason is, with all its moral consequences. That is what a truth is. Reporters have to say those truths. And then if he says something that is false or is trying to deflect from it you report it in a sentence or two and then you go back to the truth.

You might report the tweet, or not, in a very short sentence and then you go back to the real news and state that what he wanted to do was not get you to think about the real news and here it is. Speak the real truth that he doesn't want people to hear before you report any tweet.

RWNJ memes, theories, beliefs and conspiracies. Ignored, they will die out. We don’t need them here on DU

There are some video clips -- late night comedians, especially -- which I cannot watch because they include snippets of that thing.

If enough people ostracize the trolls in our White House, those trolls will melt down to the primordial goo from which they sprang.

This is not the same as ignoring their vile actions and speech.

Some folks here may remember the fad of streaking at football games. It, and the more radical attention-seeking acts, faded very quickly once the cameras stopped giving them public exposure (pun intended).

and it would be dangerous to do it for an extended period, and it's not really practical, etc., etc.,... ... but... I would LOVE to have one "day without Drumpf" in which no one in the media covers him, no one asks him questions, no one videos him, no one re-tweets him or plays clips of him lying (i.e., talking), no one speculates about what he really meant when he blathered from the teleprompter or spewed bile or equivocated himself or feigned ignorance. No one would speculate about when he's going to change his tune or how long till he's impeached. Just completely ignore him as if he doesn't exist and never existed at all, except in an alternate reality or bad dream from which we have freed ourselves. And the same for all his henchmen and henchwomen, sycophants, appointees, co-conspirators, relatives, every vile person he's touched or who vouches for him. Ignore them all for one day. Think of the other things the news could cover, both good and bad. Think of the beautiful and constructive things to which we could turn our minds, direct our energies. Think of the mental healing we could experience, remembering when the world was normal.

This ogre and the lying GOP and their media minions are sucking the energy out of all of us, sapping our millions of lives to feed his vile ego and line all their pockets. Destroying the minds, the psyches of a third of our co-citizens, harming the lives of all them plus a goodly fraction of the rest of us. All the energy that has gone into nurturing and sustaining and growing us for all the years of our lives, and our ancestors before us, creating and growing and defending this imperfect union, all this energy sucked up to enrich the oligarchs.

I know, I should just take a 24-hour news break of my own. I recognize that I have the privilege and luxury to be able to do that. I recognize that others are not so fortunate, and I recognize that in a media blackout, even more pernicious things could take place than have already.

This is not a well-thought-out post, and has, I'm sure, many internal inconsistencies and bad outcomes if followed to logical conclusions. It's just some musings I've been having the last few days since things sunk to an even lower level than ever before.

All (D). For judge retention, I looked up each and every one and only voted to retain those who were selected by Democratic governors. And I've donated to several races that need the help, both locally and around the country. I wish I had time to volunteer, but I don't. So, I say all this to point out that I'm trying to stay positive, and doing what I can.
